With Nandana Nandanasutta
Standing to one side, the godling Nandana addressed the Buddha in verse: Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho nandano devaputto bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
“I ask you, Gotama, whose wisdom is vast, “Pucchāmi taṁ gotama bhūripañña, the Blessed One
of unhindered knowledge and vision.
Anāvaṭaṁ bhagavato ñāṇadassanaṁ; What sort do they call ethical? Kathaṁvidhaṁ sīlavantaṁ vadanti, What sort do they call wise? Kathaṁvidhaṁ paññavantaṁ vadanti; What sort lives on after transcending suffering? Kathaṁvidho dukkhamaticca iriyati, What sort is worshiped by the deities?” Kathaṁvidhaṁ devatā pūjayantī”ti.“Someone who is ethical, wise, evolved, “Yo sīlavā paññavā bhāvitatto, becomes serene, loving absorption, mindful, Samāhito jhānarato satīmā; who’s gotten rid of and given up all sorrows, Sabbassa sokā vigatā pahīnā, with defilements ended, they bear their final body. Khīṇāsavo antimadehadhārī.
That sort they call ethical. Tathāvidhaṁ sīlavantaṁ vadanti, That sort they call wise. Tathāvidhaṁ paññavantaṁ vadanti; That sort lives on after transcending suffering. Tathāvidho dukkhamaticca iriyati, That sort is worshiped by the deities.” Tathāvidhaṁ devatā pūjayantī”ti.
