Jenta, the High Priest’s Son Purohitaputtajentattheragāthā
I was drunk with the pride of birth “Jātimadena mattohaṁ, and wealth and authority. bhogaissariyena ca; I wandered about intoxicated Saṇṭhānavaṇṇarūpena, with my own gorgeous body. madamatto acārihaṁ.
No-one was my equal or my better—Nāttano samakaṁ kañci, or so I thought. atirekaṁ ca maññisaṁ; I was such an arrogant fool, Atimānahato bālo, stuck up, waving my own flag. patthaddho ussitaddhajo.
I never paid homage to anyone: Mātaraṁ pitarañcāpi, not even my mother or father, aññepi garusammate; nor others esteemed as respectable. Na kañci abhivādesiṁ, I was stiff with pride, lacking regard for others. mānatthaddho anādaro.
When I saw the foremost leader, Disvā vināyakaṁ aggaṁ, the most excellent of charioteers, sārathīnaṁ varuttamaṁ; shining like the sun, Tapantamiva ādiccaṁ, at the fore of the mendicant Saṅgha, bhikkhusaṅghapurakkhataṁ.
I discarded conceit and vanity, Mānaṁ madañca chaḍḍetvā, and, with a clear and confident heart, vippasannena cetasā; I bowed down with my head Sirasā abhivādesiṁ, to the most excellent of all beings. sabbasattānamuttamaṁ.
The conceit of superiority
and the conceit of inferiority
Atimāno ca omāno, have been given up and eradicated. pahīnā susamūhatā; The conceit “I am” is cut off, Asmimāno samucchinno, and every kind of conceit is destroyed. sabbe mānavidhā hatā”ti.
