On the Bank of the Sutanu Sutanusutta
At one time Venerable Anuruddha was staying near SÄvatthÄ« on the bank of the Sutanu. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ anuruddho sÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati sutanutÄ«re. Then several mendicants went up to Venerable Anuruddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Atha kho sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« yenÄyasmÄ anuruddho tenupasaį¹ kamiį¹su; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ ÄyasmatÄ anuruddhena saddhiį¹ sammodiį¹su. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side, and said to him: SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmantaį¹ anuruddhaį¹ etadavocuį¹:
āWhat things has Venerable Anuruddha developed and cultivated to attain great direct knowledge?ā ākatamesaį¹ ÄyasmÄ anuruddho dhammÄnaį¹ bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ mahÄbhiƱƱataį¹ pattoāti?
āReverends, I attained great direct knowledge by developing and cultivating the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. āCatunnaį¹ khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, satipaį¹į¹hÄnÄnaį¹ bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ mahÄbhiƱƱataį¹ patto. What four? Katamesaį¹ catunnaį¹? I meditate observing an aspect of the bodyākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. IdhÄhaį¹, Ävuso, kÄye kÄyÄnupassÄ« viharÄmi ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹; I meditate observing an aspect of feelings ⦠vedanÄsu ā¦pe⦠mind ⦠citte ā¦pe⦠principlesākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. dhammesu dhammÄnupassÄ« viharÄmi ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹āI attained great direct knowledge by developing and cultivating these four kinds of mindfulness meditation. imesaį¹ khvÄhaį¹, Ävuso, catunnaį¹ satipaį¹į¹hÄnÄnaį¹ bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ mahÄbhiƱƱataį¹ patto.
And it was by developing and cultivating these four kinds of mindfulness meditation that I directly knew the lower principle as lower, the middle principle as middle, and the higher principle as higher.ā ImesaƱca panÄhaį¹, Ävuso, catunnaį¹ satipaį¹į¹hÄnÄnaį¹ bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ hÄ«naį¹ dhammaį¹ hÄ«nato abbhaƱƱÄsiį¹, majjhimaį¹ dhammaį¹ majjhimato abbhaƱƱÄsiį¹, paį¹Ä«taį¹ dhammaį¹ paį¹Ä«tato abbhaƱƱÄsināti.
