Going to the Far Shore Pāraṅgamasutta
“Mendicants, when these seven awakening factors are developed and cultivated they lead to going from the near shore to the far shore. “Sattime, bhikkhave, bojjhaṅgā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattanti. What seven? Katame satta? The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. Satisambojjhaṅgo …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo—These seven awakening factors, when developed and cultivated, lead to going from the near shore to the far shore. ime kho, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaṅgā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattantīti.
Few are those among humans Appakā te manussesu, who cross to the far shore. ye janā pāragāmino; The rest just run Athāyaṁ itarā pajā, around on the near shore. tīramevānudhāvati.
When the teaching is well explained, Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte, the people who practice accordingly dhamme dhammānuvattino; will cross over Te janā pāramessanti, Death’s dominion so hard to pass. maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.
Rid of dark qualities, Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya, an astute person would develop the bright. sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito; Having left home for homelessness Okā anokamāgamma, in seclusion, where joy is hard, viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
they’d long for satisfaction there. Tatrābhiratimiccheyya, Forsaking sensual pleasures, owning nothing, hitvā kāme akiñcano; an astute person would cleanse themselves Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ, of mental corruptions. cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
And those whose minds are rightly developed Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu, in the awakening factors; sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ; who, letting go of attachments, Ādānappaṭinissagge, delight in not grasping—anupādāya ye ratā; with defilements ended, brilliant, Khīṇāsavā jutimanto, they are quenched in this world.” te loke parinibbutā”ti.
