18. The Ocean
The Simile of Hands and Feet (2nd)
āMendicants, when there are hands, thereās picking up and putting down. When there are feet, thereās coming and going. When there are joints, thereās contracting and extending. When thereās a belly, thereās hunger and thirst.
In the same way, when thereās an eye, pleasure and pain arise internally conditioned by eye contact. When thereās an ear ⦠nose ⦠tongue ⦠body ⦠mind, pleasure and pain arise internally conditioned by mind contact.
When there are no hands, thereās no picking up and putting down. When there are no feet, thereās no coming and going. When there are no joints, thereās no contracting and extending. When thereās no belly, thereās no hunger and thirst.
In the same way, when thereās no eye, pleasure and pain donāt arise internally conditioned by eye contact. When thereās no ear ⦠nose ⦠tongue ⦠body ⦠mind, pleasure and pain donāt arise internally conditioned by mind contact.ā
