The Leash to Existence Bhavanettisutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Seated to one side, Venerable Rādha said to the Buddha: Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā rādho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜the cessation of the leash to existence’. ā€œā€˜bhavanettinirodho, bhavanettinirodho’ti, bhante, vuccati. What is the leash to existence? And what is the cessation of the leash to existence?ā€ Katamā nu kho, bhante, bhavanetti, katamo bhavanettinirodhoā€ti?

ā€œRādha, any desire, greed, relishing, and craving for form; and any attraction, grasping, mental fixation, insistence, and underlying tendenciesā€”ā€œRÅ«pe kho, rādha, yo chando yo rāgo yā nandÄ« yā taṇhā ye upayupādānā cetaso adhiį¹­į¹­hānābhinivesānusayā—this is called the leash to existence. ayaṁ vuccati bhavanetti. Their cessation is the cessation of the leash to existence. Tesaṁ nirodho bhavanettinirodho.

Any desire, greed, relishing, and craving for feeling … Vedanāya … perception … saƱƱāya … choices … saį¹…khāresu … consciousness; and any attraction, grasping, mental fixation, insistence, and underlying tendencies—viññāṇe yo chando …pe… adhiį¹­į¹­hānābhinivesānusayā—this is called the leash to existence. ayaṁ vuccati bhavanetti. Their cessation is the cessation of the leash to existence.ā€ Tesaṁ nirodho bhavanettinirodhoā€ti.
