1. The Simile of the Field 1. Khettūpamapetavatthu
Homage to the Blessed, Noble, and Perfectly Enlightened One. Namo tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammāsambuddhassa.
Arahants are like fields, “Khettūpamā arahanto, Donors are like farmers, dāyakā kassakūpamā; A gift is like a seed, Bījūpamaṁ deyyadhammaṁ, And from this, the fruit grows. etto nibbattate phalaṁ.
The seed is sown in the field, Etaṁ bījaṁ kasi khettaṁ, For the benefit of the departed and the donor. petānaṁ dāyakassa ca; The departed feed from it, Taṁ petā paribhuñjanti, And the donor grows in merit. dātā puññena vaḍḍhati.
Having done what's wholesome in this way, Idheva kusalaṁ katvā, You honor the departed. Pete ca paṭipūjiya; Having made good karma, Saggañca kamatiṭṭhānaṁ, One goes to the ground of heaven. Kammaṁ katvāna bhaddakan”ti.
