Weaknesses in Training and Mindfulness Meditation Sikkhādubbalyasutta

ā€œMendicants, there are these five weaknesses when you’re training. ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, sikkhādubbalyāni. What five? Katamāni paƱca? Killing living creatures, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor. Pāṇātipāto, adinnādānaṁ, kāmesumicchācāro, musāvādo, surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānaṁ—These are the five weaknesses when you’re training. imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca sikkhādubbalyāni.

To give up these five weaknesses in your training you should develop the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ sikkhādubbalyānaṁ pahānāya cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā bhāvetabbā. What four? Katame cattāro? It’s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … vedanāsu …pe… They meditate observing an aspect of the mind … citte … They meditate observing an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. To give up those five weaknesses in your training you should develop these four kinds of mindfulness meditation.ā€ Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ sikkhādubbalyānaṁ pahānāya ime cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā bhāvetabbÄā€ti.
