Brief Advice to Gotamī SaṠkhittasutta
At one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹. Then MahÄpajÄpati GotamÄ« went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him: Atha kho mahÄpajÄpatÄ« gotamÄ« yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹hitÄ kho sÄ mahÄpajÄpatÄ« gotamÄ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iāve heard it, Iāll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā āSÄdhu me, bhante, bhagavÄ saį¹ khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvÄ ekÄ vÅ«pakaį¹į¹hÄ appamattÄ ÄtÄpinÄ« pahitattÄ vihareyyanāti.
āGotamÄ«, you might know that certain things āYe kho tvaį¹, gotami, dhamme jÄneyyÄsi: lead to passion, not dispassion; āime dhammÄ sarÄgÄya saį¹vattanti, no virÄgÄya; to yoking, not to unyoking; saį¹yogÄya saį¹vattanti, no visaį¹yogÄya; to accumulation, not dispersal; ÄcayÄya saį¹vattanti, no apacayÄya; to more desires, not fewer; mahicchatÄya saį¹vattanti, no appicchatÄya; to lack of contentment, not contentment; asantuį¹į¹hiyÄ saį¹vattanti, no santuį¹į¹hiyÄ; to crowding, not seclusion; saį¹ gaį¹ikÄya saį¹vattanti, no pavivekÄya; to laziness, not energy; kosajjÄya saį¹vattanti, no vÄ«riyÄrambhÄya; to being burdensome, not being unburdensome. dubbharatÄya saį¹vattanti, no subharatÄyÄāti, Categorically, you should remember these things as ekaį¹sena, gotami, dhÄreyyÄsi: not the teaching, not the training, and not the Teacherās instructions. āneso dhammo, neso vinayo, netaį¹ satthusÄsananāti.
