The Teacher’s Instructions Satthusāsanasutta

Then Venerable Upāli went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho āyasmā upāli yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā upāli bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€ ā€œSādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti.

ā€œUpāli, you might know that ā€œYe kho tvaṁ, upāli, dhamme jāneyyāsi: certain things don’t lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. ā€˜ime dhammā na ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattantī’ti; Categorically, you should remember these things as ekaṁsena, upāli, dhāreyyāsi: not the teaching, not the training, and not the Teacher’s instructions. ā€˜neso dhammo neso vinayo netaṁ satthusāsanan’ti. You might know that Ye ca kho tvaṁ, upāli, dhamme jāneyyāsi: certain things do lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. ā€˜ime dhammā ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattantī’ti; Categorically, you should remember these things as ekaṁsena, upāli, dhāreyyāsi: the teaching, the training, and the Teacher’s instructions.ā€ ā€˜eso dhammo eso vinayo etaṁ satthusāsananā€™ā€ti.
