Appearance Rūpasutta

ā€œMendicants, these four individuals are found in the world. ā€œCattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. What four? Katame cattāro? There are those whose estimation of and confidence in others is based on their appearance, on their voice, on their mortification, and on principle. RÅ«pappamāṇo rÅ«pappasanno, ghosappamāṇo ghosappasanno, lÅ«khappamāṇo lÅ«khappasanno, dhammappamāṇo dhammappasanno—

These are the four individuals found in the world. Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasminti.

Those who judge on appearance, Ye ca rÅ«pe pamāṇiṁsu, and those swayed by a voice, ye ca ghosena anvagÅ«; are full of desire and greed; ChandarāgavasÅ«petā, those people just don’t understand. nābhijānanti te janā.

Not knowing what’s inside, AjjhattaƱca na jānāti, nor seeing what’s outside, bahiddhā ca na passati; the fool shut in on every side, Samantāvaraṇo bālo, gets carried away by a voice. sa ve ghosena vuyhati.

Not knowing what’s inside, AjjhattaƱca na jānāti, but discerning what’s outside, bahiddhā ca vipassati; seeing the fruit outside, Bahiddhā phaladassāvÄ«, they’re also carried away by a voice. sopi ghosena vuyhati.

Understanding what’s inside, AjjhattaƱca pajānāti, and discerning what’s outside, bahiddhā ca vipassati; seeing without hindrances, VinÄ«varaṇadassāvÄ«, they don’t get carried away by a voice.ā€ na so ghosena vuyhatÄ«ā€ti.
