Appearance Rūpasutta
āMendicants, these four individuals are found in the world. āCattÄrome, bhikkhave, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. What four? Katame cattÄro? There are those whose estimation of and confidence in others is based on their appearance, on their voice, on their mortification, and on principle. RÅ«pappamÄį¹o rÅ«pappasanno, ghosappamÄį¹o ghosappasanno, lÅ«khappamÄį¹o lÅ«khappasanno, dhammappamÄį¹o dhammappasannoā
These are the four individuals found in the world. Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattÄro puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasminti.
Those who judge on appearance, Ye ca rÅ«pe pamÄį¹iį¹su, and those swayed by a voice, ye ca ghosena anvagÅ«; are full of desire and greed; ChandarÄgavasÅ«petÄ, those people just donāt understand. nÄbhijÄnanti te janÄ.
Not knowing whatās inside, AjjhattaƱca na jÄnÄti, nor seeing whatās outside, bahiddhÄ ca na passati; the fool shut in on every side, SamantÄvaraį¹o bÄlo, gets carried away by a voice. sa ve ghosena vuyhati.
Not knowing whatās inside, AjjhattaƱca na jÄnÄti, but discerning whatās outside, bahiddhÄ ca vipassati; seeing the fruit outside, BahiddhÄ phaladassÄvÄ«, theyāre also carried away by a voice. sopi ghosena vuyhati.
Understanding whatās inside, AjjhattaƱca pajÄnÄti, and discerning whatās outside, bahiddhÄ ca vipassati; seeing without hindrances, VinÄ«varaį¹adassÄvÄ«, they donāt get carried away by a voice.ā na so ghosena vuyhatÄ«āti.
