Purity (1st) Paį¹­hamasoceyyasutta

ā€œMendicants, there are these three kinds of purity. ā€œTīṇimāni, bhikkhave, soceyyāni. What three? Katamāni tīṇi? Purity of body, speech, and mind. Kāyasoceyyaṁ, vacÄ«soceyyaṁ, manosoceyyaṁ.

And what is purity of body? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, kāyasoceyyaṁ? It’s when someone doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāṇātipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­ivirato hoti. This is called ā€˜purity of body’. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kāyasoceyyaṁ.

And what is purity of speech? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, vacÄ«soceyyaṁ? It’s when someone doesn’t use speech that’s false, backbiting, harsh, or nonsensical. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco musāvādā paį¹­ivirato hoti, pisuṇāya vācāya paį¹­ivirato hoti, pharusāya vācāya paį¹­ivirato hoti, samphappalāpā paį¹­ivirato hoti. This is called ā€˜purity of speech’. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vacÄ«soceyyaṁ.

And what is purity of mind? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, manosoceyyaṁ? It’s when someone is content, kind-hearted, and has right view. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco anabhijjhālu hoti abyāpannacitto sammādiį¹­į¹­hiko. This is called ā€˜purity of mind’. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, manosoceyyaṁ.

These are the three kinds of purity.ā€ Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi soceyyānÄ«ā€ti.
