With Pasūra Pasūrasutta
āHere alone is purity,ā they say, Idheva suddhÄ« iti vÄdayanti, denying that there is purification in other teachings. NÄƱƱesu dhammesu visuddhimÄhu; Speaking of the beauty
in that which they depend on,
Yaį¹ nissitÄ tattha subhaį¹ vadÄnÄ, each one is dogmatic about
their own idiosyncratic interpretation.
Paccekasaccesu puthÅ« niviį¹į¹hÄ.Desiring debate, they plunge into an assembly, Te vÄdakÄmÄ parisaį¹ vigayha, where each takes the other as a fool. BÄlaį¹ dahantÄ« mithu aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹; Relying on others they state their contention, Vadanti te aƱƱasitÄ kathojjaį¹, desiring praise while claiming to be skilled. Pasaį¹sakÄmÄ kusalÄ vadÄnÄ.
Addicted to debating in the midst of the assembly, Yutto kathÄyaį¹ parisÄya majjhe, their need for praise makes them nervous. Pasaį¹samicchaį¹ vinighÄti hoti; But when theyāre repudiated they get embarrassed; ApÄhatasmiį¹ pana maį¹ ku hoti, upset at criticism, they find fault in others. NindÄya so kuppati randhamesÄ«.
If their doctrine is said to be weak, Yamassa vÄdaį¹ parihÄ«namÄhu, and judges declare it repudiated, ApÄhataį¹ paƱhavimaį¹sakÄse; the loser weeps and wails, Paridevati socati hÄ«navÄdo, moaning, āThey beat me.ā UpaccagÄ manti anutthunÄti.
When these disputes come up among ascetics, Ete vivÄdÄ samaį¹esu jÄtÄ, they get excited or dejected. Etesu ugghÄtinighÄti hoti; Seeing this, refrain from contention, Etampi disvÄ virame kathojjaį¹, for the only purpose is praise and profit. Na haƱƱadatthatthi pasaį¹salÄbhÄ.
But if, having declared their doctrine, Pasaį¹sito vÄ pana tattha hoti, they are praised there in the midst of the assembly, AkkhÄya vÄdaį¹ parisÄya majjhe; they laugh and gloat because of it, So hassatÄ« unnamatÄ« ca tena, having got what they wanted. Pappuyya tamatthaį¹ yathÄ mano ahu.
Their pride is their downfall, YÄ unnatÄ« sÄssa vighÄtabhÅ«mi, yet they speak from conceit and arrogance. MÄnÄtimÄnaį¹ vadate paneso; Seeing this, one ought not dispute, Etampi disvÄ na vivÄdayetha, for those who are skilled say this is no way to purity. Na hi tena suddhiį¹ kusalÄ vadanti.
As a warrior, after feasting on royal food, SÅ«ro yathÄ rÄjakhÄdÄya puį¹į¹ho, goes roaring, looking for someone to fightāAbhigajjameti paį¹isÅ«ramicchaį¹; go off and find an opponent, SÅ«ra, Yeneva so tena palehi sÅ«ra, for here, as before, there is no-one to combat. Pubbeva natthi yadidaį¹ yudhÄya.
When someone disputes about a view theyāve adopted, Ye diį¹į¹himuggayha vivÄdayanti, saying, āThis is the only truth,ā Idameva saccanti ca vÄdayanti; say to them, āHere youāll have no adversary Te tvaį¹ vadassÅ« na hi tedha atthi, when a dispute has come up.ā VÄdamhi jÄte paį¹isenikattÄ.
There are those who live far from the crowd, VisenikatvÄ pana ye caranti, not countering views with view. Diį¹į¹hÄ«hi diį¹į¹hiį¹ avirujjhamÄnÄ; Who is there to argue with you, PasÅ«ra, Tesu tvaį¹ kiį¹ labhetho pasÅ«ra, among those who grasp nothing here as the highest? YesÄ«dha natthÄ« paramuggahÄ«taį¹.
And so you come along speculating, Atha tvaį¹ pavitakkamÄgamÄ, thinking up theories in your mind. ManasÄ diį¹į¹higatÄni cintayanto; Now that youāve challenged
someone who is cleansed,
Dhonena yugaį¹ samÄgamÄ, youāll not be able to respond. Na hi tvaį¹ sakkhasi sampayÄtaveti.
