Analysis (2nd) Dutiyavibhaį¹ gasutta
āMendicants, there are these five faculties. āPaƱcimÄni, bhikkhave, indriyÄni. What five? KatamÄni paƱca? The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom. Saddhindriyaį¹ ā¦pe⦠paƱƱindriyaį¹.
And what is the faculty of faith? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized Oneās awakening: Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathÄgatassa bodhiį¹: āThat Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā āitipi so bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho vijjÄcaraį¹asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasÄrathi satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄātiāThis is called the faculty of faith. idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaį¹.
And what is the faculty of energy? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. Theyāre strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako ÄraddhavÄ«riyo viharati akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya, kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ upasampadÄya, thÄmavÄ daįø·haparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities donāt arise. So anuppannÄnaį¹ pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ anuppÄdÄya chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up. uppannÄnaį¹ pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise. anuppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ uppÄdÄya chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development. uppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ į¹hitiyÄ asammosÄya bhiyyobhÄvÄya vepullÄya bhÄvanÄya pÄripÅ«riyÄ chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahatiāThis is called the faculty of energy. idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹.
And what is the faculty of mindfulness? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, satindriyaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple is mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako satimÄ hoti paramena satinepakkena samannÄgato, cirakatampi cirabhÄsitampi saritÄ anussaritÄ. They meditate observing an aspect of the bodyākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. So kÄye kÄyÄnupassÄ« viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹; They meditate observing an aspect of feelings ⦠vedanÄsu ā¦pe⦠mind ⦠citte ā¦pe⦠principlesākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. dhammesu dhammÄnupassÄ« viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹āThis is called the faculty of mindfulness. idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, satindriyaį¹.
And what is the faculty of immersion? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, samÄdhindriyaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple, relying on letting go, gains immersion, gains unification of mind. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako vossaggÄrammaį¹aį¹ karitvÄ labhati samÄdhiį¹, labhati cittassa ekaggataį¹. Quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, they enter and remain in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected. So vivicceva kÄmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaį¹ savicÄraį¹ vivekajaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ paį¹hamaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, they enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected. VitakkavicÄrÄnaį¹ vÅ«pasamÄ ajjhattaį¹ sampasÄdanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhÄvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicÄraį¹ samÄdhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. And with the fading away of rapture, they enter and remain in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, āEquanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.ā PÄ«tiyÄ ca virÄgÄ upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajÄno sukhaƱca kÄyena paį¹isaį¹vedeti yaį¹ taį¹ ariyÄ Äcikkhanti āupekkhako satimÄ sukhavihÄrÄ«āti tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. With the giving up of pleasure and pain and the disappearance of former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness. Sukhassa ca pahÄnÄ dukkhassa ca pahÄnÄ pubbeva somanassadomanassÄnaį¹ atthaį¹ gamÄ adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhÄsatipÄrisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharatiāThis is called the faculty of immersion. idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, samÄdhindriyaį¹.
And what is the faculty of wisdom? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, paƱƱindriyaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako paƱƱavÄ hoti udayatthagÄminiyÄ paƱƱÄya samannÄgato ariyÄya nibbedhikÄya, sammÄ dukkhakkhayagÄminiyÄ. They truly understand: āThis is sufferingā ⦠āThis is the origin of sufferingā ⦠āThis is the cessation of sufferingā ⦠āThis is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā. So āidaį¹ dukkhanāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti, āayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄtiāThis is called the faculty of wisdom. idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, paƱƱindriyaį¹.
These are the five faculties.ā ImÄni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcindriyÄnÄ«āti.
