āMendicants, when a mendicant is accomplished in ethics, immersion, knowledge, freedom, or the knowledge and vision of freedom, even the sight of them is very helpful, I say. āYe te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« sÄ«lasampannÄ samÄdhisampannÄ Ć±Äį¹asampannÄ vimuttisampannÄ vimuttiƱÄį¹adassanasampannÄ, dassanampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahukÄraį¹ vadÄmi; Even to hear them, savanampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahukÄraį¹ vadÄmi; approach them, upasaį¹ kamanampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahukÄraį¹ vadÄmi; pay homage to them, payirupÄsanampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahukÄraį¹ vadÄmi; recollect them, anussatimpÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahukÄraį¹ vadÄmi; or go forth following them is very helpful, I say. anupabbajjampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahukÄraį¹ vadÄmi. Why is that? Taį¹ kissa hetu? Because after hearing the teaching of such mendicants, a mendicant will live withdrawn in both body and mind, TathÄrÅ«pÄnaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ dhammaį¹ sutvÄ dvayena vÅ«pakÄsena vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho viharatiākÄyavÅ«pakÄsena ca cittavÅ«pakÄsena ca. as they recollect and think about that teaching. So tathÄ vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho viharanto taį¹ dhammaį¹ anussarati anuvitakketi.
At such a time, a mendicant has initiated the awakening factor of mindfulness; Yasmiį¹ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathÄ vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho viharanto taį¹ dhammaį¹ anussarati anuvitakketi, satisambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti; they develop it satisambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti; and perfect it. satisambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. As they live mindfully in this way they investigate, explore, and inquire into that teaching with wisdom. So tathÄ sato viharanto taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱÄya pavicinati pavicarati parivÄ«maį¹samÄpajjati.
At such a time, a mendicant has initiated the awakening factor of investigation of principles; Yasmiį¹ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathÄ sato viharanto taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱÄya pavicinati pavicarati parivÄ«maį¹samÄpajjati, dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti; they develop it dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti; and perfect it. dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. As they investigate principles with wisdom in this way their energy is roused up and unflagging. Tassa taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱÄya pavicinato pavicarato parivÄ«maį¹samÄpajjato Äraddhaį¹ hoti vÄ«riyaį¹ asallÄ«naį¹.
At such a time, a mendicant has initiated the awakening factor of energy; they develop it and perfect it. Yasmiį¹ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱÄya pavicinato pavicarato parivÄ«maį¹samÄpajjato Äraddhaį¹ hoti vÄ«riyaį¹ asallÄ«naį¹, vÄ«riyasambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti; vÄ«riyasambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti; vÄ«riyasambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. When theyāre energetic, rapture not of the flesh arises. ÄraddhavÄ«riyassa uppajjati pÄ«ti nirÄmisÄ.
At such a time, a mendicant has initiated the awakening factor of rapture; they develop it and perfect it. Yasmiį¹ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno ÄraddhavÄ«riyassa uppajjati pÄ«ti nirÄmisÄ, pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti; pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti; pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. When the mind is full of rapture, the body and mind become tranquil. PÄ«timanassa kÄyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati.
At such a time, a mendicant has initiated the awakening factor of tranquility; they develop it and perfect it. Yasmiį¹ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pÄ«timanassa kÄyopi passambhati cittampi passambhati, passaddhisambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti; passaddhisambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti; passaddhisambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. When the body is tranquil and one feels bliss, the mind becomes immersed in samÄdhi. PassaddhakÄyassa sukhino cittaį¹ samÄdhiyati.
At such a time, a mendicant has initiated the awakening factor of immersion; they develop it and perfect it. Yasmiį¹ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno passaddhakÄyassa sukhino cittaį¹ samÄdhiyati, samÄdhisambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti; samÄdhisambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti; samÄdhisambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. They closely watch over that mind immersed in samÄdhi. So tathÄsamÄhitaį¹ cittaį¹ sÄdhukaį¹ ajjhupekkhitÄ hoti.
At such a time, a mendicant has initiated the awakening factor of equanimity; they develop it and perfect it. Yasmiį¹ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathÄsamÄhitaį¹ cittaį¹ sÄdhukaį¹ ajjhupekkhitÄ hoti, upekkhÄsambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti; upekkhÄsambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti; upekkhÄsambojjhaį¹ go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.
When the seven awakening factors are developed and cultivated in this way they can expect seven fruits and benefits. Evaį¹ bhÄvitesu kho, bhikkhave, sattasu sambojjhaį¹ gesu evaį¹ bahulÄ«katesu satta phalÄ sattÄnisaį¹sÄ pÄį¹ikaį¹ khÄ. What seven? Katame satta phalÄ sattÄnisaį¹sÄ? They attain enlightenment early on in this very life. Diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti. If not, they attain enlightenment at the time of death. No ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, atha maraį¹akÄle aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti. If not, with the ending of the five lower fetters, theyāre extinguished between one life and the next. No ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce maraį¹akÄle aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, atha paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ antarÄparinibbÄyÄ« hoti. If not, with the ending of the five lower fetters theyāre extinguished upon landing. No ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce maraį¹akÄle aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ antarÄparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, atha paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ upahaccaparinibbÄyÄ« hoti. If not, with the ending of the five lower fetters theyāre extinguished without extra effort. No ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce maraį¹akÄle aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ antarÄparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ upahaccaparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, atha paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ asaį¹ khÄraparinibbÄyÄ« hoti. If not, with the ending of the five lower fetters theyāre extinguished with extra effort. No ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce maraį¹akÄle aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ antarÄparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ upahaccaparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ asaį¹ khÄraparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, atha paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ sasaį¹ khÄraparinibbÄyÄ« hoti. If not, with the ending of the five lower fetters they head upstream, going to the Akaniį¹į¹ha realm. No ce diį¹į¹heva dhamme paį¹ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce maraį¹akÄle aƱƱaį¹ ÄrÄdheti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ antarÄparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ upahaccaparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ asaį¹ khÄraparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, no ce paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ sasaį¹ khÄraparinibbÄyÄ« hoti, atha paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ uddhaį¹soto hoti akaniį¹į¹hagÄmÄ«. When the seven awakening factors are developed and cultivated in this way these are the seven fruits and benefits they can expect.ā Evaį¹ bhÄvitesu kho, bhikkhave, sattasu bojjhaį¹ gesu evaį¹ bahulÄ«katesu ime satta phalÄ sattÄnisaį¹sÄ pÄį¹ikaį¹ khÄāti.
