Seeing the Sick GilÄnadassanasutta
Now at that time the householder Citta was sick, suffering, gravely ill. Tena kho pana samayena citto gahapati ÄbÄdhiko hoti dukkhito bÄįø·hagilÄno.
Then several deities of the parks, forests, trees, and those who haunt the herbs, grass, and big trees came together and said to Citta, Atha kho sambahulÄ ÄrÄmadevatÄ vanadevatÄ rukkhadevatÄ osadhitiį¹avanappatÄ«su adhivatthÄ devatÄ saį¹ gamma samÄgamma cittaį¹ gahapatiį¹ etadavocuį¹: āHouseholder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!ā āpaį¹idhehi, gahapati, anÄgatamaddhÄnaį¹ rÄjÄ assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«āti.
When they said this, Citta said to them, Evaį¹ vutte, citto gahapati tÄ ÄrÄmadevatÄ vanadevatÄ rukkhadevatÄ osadhitiį¹avanappatÄ«su adhivatthÄ devatÄ etadavoca: āThat too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!ā ātampi aniccaį¹, tampi addhuvaį¹, tampi pahÄya gamanÄ«yanāti.
When he said this, his friends and colleagues, relatives and kin said, Evaį¹ vutte, cittassa gahapatino mittÄmaccÄ Ć±ÄtisÄlohitÄ cittaį¹ gahapatiį¹ etadavocuį¹: āBe mindful, master! Donāt babble.ā āsatiį¹, ayyaputta, upaį¹į¹hapehi, mÄ vippalapÄ«āti.
āWhat have I said that makes you say that?ā āKiį¹ tÄhaį¹ vadÄmi yaį¹ maį¹ tumhe evaį¹ vadetha: āsatiį¹, ayyaputta, upaį¹į¹hapehi, mÄ vippalapÄ«āāti?
āItās because you said: āEvaį¹ kho tvaį¹, ayyaputta, vadesi: āThat too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!āā ātampi aniccaį¹, tampi addhuvaį¹, tampi pahÄya gamanÄ«yanāāti.
āOh, well, thatās because the deities of the parks, forests, trees, and those who haunt the herbs, grass, and big trees said to me: āTathÄ hi pana maį¹ ÄrÄmadevatÄ vanadevatÄ rukkhadevatÄ osadhitiį¹avanappatÄ«su adhivatthÄ devatÄ evamÄhaį¹su: āHouseholder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!ā āpaį¹idhehi, gahapati, anÄgatamaddhÄnaį¹ rÄjÄ assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«āti. So I said to them: TÄhaį¹ evaį¹ vadÄmi: āThat too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!āā ātampi aniccaį¹ ā¦pe⦠tampi pahÄya gamanÄ«yanāāti.
āBut what reason do they see for saying that to you?ā āKiį¹ pana tÄ, ayyaputta, ÄrÄmadevatÄ vanadevatÄ rukkhadevatÄ osadhitiį¹avanappatÄ«su adhivatthÄ devatÄ atthavasaį¹ sampassamÄnÄ evamÄhaį¹su: āpaį¹idhehi, gahapati, anÄgatamaddhÄnaį¹ rÄjÄ assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«āāti?
āThey think: āTÄsaį¹ kho ÄrÄmadevatÄnaį¹ vanadevatÄnaį¹ rukkhadevatÄnaį¹ osadhitiį¹avanappatÄ«su adhivatthÄnaį¹ devatÄnaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: āThis householder Citta is ethical, of good character. āayaį¹ kho citto gahapati, sÄ«lavÄ kalyÄį¹adhammo. If he makes a wish to Sace paį¹idahissatiābecome a wheel-turning monarch in the future, his heartās wish will succeed because of the purity of his ethics. And then as a proper, principled king he will provide proper spirit-offerings.ā anÄgatamaddhÄnaį¹ rÄjÄ assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«āti, ātassa kho ayaį¹ ijjhissati, sÄ«lavato cetopaį¹idhi visuddhattÄ dhammiko dhammikaį¹ phalaį¹ anupassatÄ«āti. Thatās the reason they see for saying to me: Imaį¹ kho tÄ ÄrÄmadevatÄ vanadevatÄ rukkhadevatÄ osadhitiį¹avanappatÄ«su adhivatthÄ devatÄ atthavasaį¹ sampassamÄnÄ evamÄhaį¹su: āHouseholder, make a wish to become a wheel-turning monarch in the future!ā āpaį¹idhehi, gahapati, anÄgatamaddhÄnaį¹ rÄjÄ assaį¹ cakkavattÄ«āti. So I said to them: TÄhaį¹ evaį¹ vadÄmi: āThat too is impermanent! That too will pass! That too will be left behind!āā ātampi aniccaį¹, tampi addhuvaį¹, tampi pahÄya gamanÄ«yanāāti.
āThen, master, advise us!ā āTena hi, ayyaputta, amhepi ovadÄhÄ«āti.
āSo you should train like this: āTasmÄ hi vo evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹ā
We will have experiential confidence in the Buddha: buddhe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgatÄ bhavissÄma: āThat Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā āitipi so bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho vijjÄcaraį¹asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasÄrathi satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄāti.
We will have experiential confidence in the teaching: Dhamme aveccappasÄdena samannÄgatÄ bhavissÄma: āThe teaching is well explained by the Buddhaāapparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā āsvÄkkhÄto bhagavatÄ dhammo sandiį¹į¹hiko akÄliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viññūhÄ«āti.
We will have experiential confidence in the Saį¹ gha: Saį¹ ghe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgatÄ bhavissÄma: āThe Saį¹ gha of the Buddhaās disciples is practicing the way thatās good, direct, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individual persons. This is the Saį¹ gha of the Buddhaās disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with cupped palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.ā āsuppaį¹ipanno bhagavato sÄvakasaį¹ gho, ujuppaį¹ipanno bhagavato sÄvakasaį¹ gho, ƱÄyappaį¹ipanno bhagavato sÄvakasaį¹ gho, sÄmÄ«cippaį¹ipanno bhagavato sÄvakasaį¹ gho, yadidaį¹ cattÄri purisayugÄni aį¹į¹ha purisapuggalÄ esa bhagavato sÄvakasaį¹ gho Ähuneyyo pÄhuneyyo dakkhiį¹eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassÄāti.
And we will share without reservation all the gifts available to give in our family with those who are ethical and of good character.ā Yaį¹ kho pana kiƱci kule deyyadhammaį¹ sabbaį¹ taį¹ appaį¹ivibhattaį¹ bhavissati sÄ«lavantehi kalyÄį¹adhammehÄ«ti evaƱhi vo sikkhitabbanāti.
Then, after Citta had encouraged his friends and colleagues, relatives and kin in the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹ gha, and generosity, he passed away. Atha kho citto gahapati mittÄmacce ƱÄtisÄlohite buddhe ca dhamme ca saį¹ ghe ca cÄge ca samÄdapetvÄ kÄlamakÄsÄ«ti.
