A Fish Dealer Macchabandhasutta
At one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans together with a large Saį¹ gha of mendicants. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosalesu cÄrikaį¹ carati mahatÄ bhikkhusaį¹ ghena saddhiį¹.
While walking along the road he saw a fish dealer in a certain spot selling fish that he had killed himself. AddasÄ kho bhagavÄ addhÄnamaggappaį¹ipanno aƱƱatarasmiį¹ padese macchikaį¹ macchabandhaį¹ macche vadhitvÄ vadhitvÄ vikkiį¹amÄnaį¹. Seeing this he left the road, sat at the root of a tree on the seat spread out, DisvÄ maggÄ okkamma aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le paƱƱatte Äsane nisÄ«di. and addressed the mendicants, Nisajja kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āMendicants, do you see that fish dealer selling fish that he killed himself?ā āpassatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, amuį¹ macchikaį¹ macchabandhaį¹ macche vadhitvÄ vadhitvÄ vikkiį¹amÄnanāti?
āYes, sir.ā āEvaį¹, bhanteā.
āWhat do you think, mendicants? āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, Have you ever seen or heard api nu tumhehi diį¹į¹haį¹ vÄ sutaį¹ vÄ: of a fish dealer selling fish that he killed himself who, by means of that work and livelihood, got to travel by elephant, horse, chariot, or vehicle, or to enjoy wealth, or to live off a large fortune?ā āmacchiko macchabandho macche vadhitvÄ vadhitvÄ vikkiį¹amÄno tena kammena tena ÄjÄ«vena hatthiyÄyÄ« vÄ assayÄyÄ« vÄ rathayÄyÄ« vÄ yÄnayÄyÄ« vÄ bhogabhogÄ« vÄ mahantaį¹ vÄ bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhÄvasantoāāti?
āNo, sir.ā āNo hetaį¹, bhanteā.
āGood, mendicants! āSÄdhu, bhikkhave. I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. MayÄpi kho etaį¹, bhikkhave, neva diį¹į¹haį¹ na sutaį¹: āmacchiko macchabandho macche vadhitvÄ vadhitvÄ vikkiį¹amÄno tena kammena tena ÄjÄ«vena hatthiyÄyÄ« vÄ assayÄyÄ« vÄ rathayÄyÄ« vÄ yÄnayÄyÄ« vÄ bhogabhogÄ« vÄ mahantaį¹ vÄ bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhÄvasantoāti. Why is that? Taį¹ kissa hetu? Because when the fish are led to the slaughter he regards them with bad intentions. Te hi so, bhikkhave, macche vajjhe vadhÄyupanÄ«te pÄpakena manasÄnupekkhati, tasmÄ so neva hatthiyÄyÄ« hoti na assayÄyÄ« na rathayÄyÄ« na yÄnayÄyÄ« na bhogabhogÄ«, na mahantaį¹ bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhÄvasati.
What do you think, mendicants? Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, Have you ever seen or heard api nu tumhehi diį¹į¹haį¹ vÄ sutaį¹ vÄ: of a butcher of cattle selling cattle that he killed himself who, by means of that work and livelihood, got to travel by elephant, horse, chariot, or vehicle, or to enjoy wealth, or to live off a large fortune?ā āgoghÄtako gÄvo vadhitvÄ vadhitvÄ vikkiį¹amÄno tena kammena tena ÄjÄ«vena hatthiyÄyÄ« vÄ assayÄyÄ« vÄ rathayÄyÄ« vÄ yÄnayÄyÄ« vÄ bhogabhogÄ« vÄ mahantaį¹ vÄ bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhÄvasantoāāti?

By regarding even animals led to the slaughter with bad intentions he did not get to travel by elephant, horse, chariot, or vehicle, or to enjoy wealth, or to live off a large fortune. Te hi nÄma so, bhikkhave, tiracchÄnagate pÄį¹e vajjhe vadhÄyupanÄ«te pÄpakena manasÄnupekkhamÄno neva hatthiyÄyÄ« bhavissati na assayÄyÄ« na rathayÄyÄ« na yÄnayÄyÄ« na bhogabhogÄ«, na mahantaį¹ bhogakkhandhaį¹ ajjhÄvasissati. How much worse is someone who regards human beings brought to the slaughter with bad intentions! Ko pana vÄdo yaį¹ manussabhÅ«taį¹ vajjhaį¹ vadhÄyupanÄ«taį¹ pÄpakena manasÄnupekkhati. This will be for their lasting harm and suffering. TaƱhi tassa, bhikkhave, hoti dÄ«gharattaį¹ ahitÄya dukkhÄya. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.ā KÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjatÄ«āti.
