This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āThese three kinds of children are found in the world. āTayome, bhikkhave, puttÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. What three? Katame tayo? One who betters their birth, one who equals their birth, one who fails their birth. AtijÄto, anujÄto, avajÄtoti.
And how does a child better their birth? KathaƱca, bhikkhave, putto atijÄto hoti? Itās when a childās parents Idha, bhikkhave, puttassa mÄtÄpitaro hontiāhave not gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha. na buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ, na dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ, na saį¹ ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ; They kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, and consume intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor. Theyāre immoral, of bad character. pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ appaį¹iviratÄ, adinnÄdÄnÄ appaį¹iviratÄ, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ appaį¹iviratÄ, musÄvÄdÄ appaį¹iviratÄ, surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ appaį¹iviratÄ, dussÄ«lÄ pÄpadhammÄ. But their child Putto ca nesaį¹ hotiāhas gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha. buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato, dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato, saį¹ ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato; They donāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor. Theyāre ethical, of good character. pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirato, adinnÄdÄnÄ paį¹ivirato, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ paį¹ivirato, musÄvÄdÄ paį¹ivirato, surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹ivirato, sÄ«lavÄ kalyÄį¹adhammo. Thatās how a child betters their birth. Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, putto atijÄto hoti.
And how does a child equal their birth? KathaƱca, bhikkhave, putto anujÄto hoti? Itās when a childās parents Idha, bhikkhave, puttassa mÄtÄpitaro hontiāhave gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha. buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ, dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ, saį¹ ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ; They donāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor. Theyāre ethical, of good character. pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹iviratÄ, adinnÄdÄnÄ paį¹iviratÄ, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ paį¹iviratÄ, musÄvÄdÄ paį¹iviratÄ, surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹iviratÄ, sÄ«lavanto kalyÄį¹adhammÄ. And their child Puttopi nesaį¹ hotiāhas gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha. buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato, dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato, saį¹ ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato; They donāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor. Thatās how a child equals their birth. Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, putto anujÄto hoti.
And how does a child fail their birth? KathaƱca, bhikkhave, putto avajÄto hoti? Itās when a childās parents Idha, bhikkhave, puttassa mÄtÄpitaro hontiāhave gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha. buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ, dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ, saį¹ ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ; They donāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor. But their child Putto ca nesaį¹ hotiāhas not gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha. na buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato, na dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato, na saį¹ ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato; They kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, and consume intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor. Thatās how a child fails their birth. Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, putto avajÄto hoti. These are the three kinds of children found in the world.ā Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puttÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmināti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āThe astute wish for a child āAtijÄtaį¹ anujÄtaį¹, who betters or equals their birth; puttamicchanti paį¹įøitÄ; not one who fails their birth, AvajÄtaį¹ na icchanti, disgracing their family. yo hoti kulagandhano.
These are the children in the world Ete kho puttÄ lokasmiį¹, who become lay devotees; ye bhavanti upÄsakÄ; faithful, accomplished in ethics, SaddhÄ sÄ«lena sampannÄ, bountiful, rid of stinginess. vadaññū vÄ«tamaccharÄ; Like the moon freed from clouds, Cando abbhaghanÄ mutto, they shine in the assemblies.ā parisÄsu virocareāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
