About Gavesī Gavesīsutta
At one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans together with a large Saį¹ gha of mendicants. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosalesu cÄrikaį¹ carati mahatÄ bhikkhusaį¹ ghena saddhiį¹. While traveling along a road the Buddha saw a large sal grove in a certain spot. AddasÄ kho bhagavÄ addhÄnamaggappaį¹ipanno aƱƱatarasmiį¹ padese mahantaį¹ sÄlavanaį¹; He left the road, went to the sal grove, and plunged deep into it. Then Venerable Änanda thought, Atha kho Äyasmato Änandassa etadahosi: āWhat is the cause, what is the reason why the Buddha smiled? āko nu kho hetu ko paccayo bhagavato sitassa pÄtukammÄya? Realized Ones do not smile for no reason.ā Na akÄraį¹ena tathÄgatÄ sitaį¹ pÄtukarontÄ«āti.
So Venerable Änanda said to the Buddha, Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: āWhat is the cause, what is the reason why the Buddha smiled? āko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo bhagavato sitassa pÄtukammÄya? Realized Ones do not smile for no reason.ā Na akÄraį¹ena tathÄgatÄ sitaį¹ pÄtukarontÄ«āti.
āOnce upon a time, Änanda, there was a city in this spot that was successful and prosperous, populous, full of people. āBhÅ«tapubbaį¹, Änanda, imasmiį¹ padese nagaraį¹ ahosi iddhaƱceva phÄ«taƱca bahujanaį¹ Äkiį¹į¹amanussaį¹. He had a lay follower named GavesÄ« who had not fulfilled all the precepts. Kassapassa kho panÄnanda, bhagavato arahato sammÄsambuddhassa gavesÄ« nÄma upÄsako ahosi sÄ«lesu aparipÅ«rakÄrÄ«. Then GavesÄ« went to those five hundred lay followers and said to them: Atha kho, Änanda, gavesÄ« upÄsako yena tÄni paƱca upÄsakasatÄni tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ tÄni paƱca upÄsakasatÄni etadavoca: āFrom this day forth may the venerables remember me as one who has fulfilled the precepts.ā āajjatagge maį¹ Äyasmanto sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakÄriį¹ dhÄrethÄāti. Then those five hundred lay followers thought: Atha kho, Änanda, tesaį¹ paƱcannaį¹ upÄsakasatÄnaį¹ etadahosi: āMaster GavesÄ« is our helper, leader, and adviser, āayyo kho gavesÄ« amhÄkaį¹ bahÅ«pakÄro pubbaį¹ gamo samÄdapetÄ. and now he will fulfill the precepts. Then those five hundred lay followers went to GavesÄ« and said to him: Atha kho, Änanda, tÄni paƱca upÄsakasatÄni yena gavesÄ« upÄsako tenupasaį¹ kamiį¹su; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ gavesiį¹ upÄsakaį¹ etadavocuį¹: āFrom this day forth may Master GavesÄ« remember these five hundred lay followers as having fulfilled the precepts.ā āajjatagge ayyo gavesÄ« imÄnipi paƱca upÄsakasatÄni sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakÄrino dhÄretÅ«āti.
Then GavesÄ« thought: Atha kho, Änanda, gavesissa upÄsakassa etadahosi: āIām the helper, leader, and adviser of these five hundred lay followers, and both I and they have fulfilled the precepts. āahaį¹ kho imesaį¹ paƱcannaį¹ upÄsakasatÄnaį¹ bahÅ«pakÄro pubbaį¹ gamo samÄdapetÄ, ahaƱcamhi sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakÄrÄ«, imÄnipi paƱca upÄsakasatÄni sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakÄrino. Then those five hundred lay followers did the same. ⦠Atha kho, Änanda, tesaį¹ paƱcannaį¹ upÄsakasatÄnaį¹ etadahosi: āayyo kho gavesÄ« amhÄkaį¹ bahÅ«pakÄro pubbaį¹ gamo samÄdapetÄ. Then those five hundred lay followers did the same. ⦠Atha kho, Änanda, tesaį¹ paƱcannaį¹ upÄsakasatÄnaį¹ etadahosi: āayyo kho gavesÄ« bahÅ«pakÄro pubbaį¹ gamo samÄdapetÄ. Then the lay follower GavesÄ« went up to the blessed one Kassapa, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha and said to him: Atha kho, Änanda, gavesÄ« upÄsako yena kassapo bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ kassapaį¹ bhagavantaį¹ arahantaį¹ sammÄsambuddhaį¹ etadavoca: āSir, may I receive the going forth, the ordination in the Buddhaās presence?ā ālabheyyÄhaį¹, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajjaį¹ labheyyaį¹ upasampadanāti. Not long after his ordination, the mendicant GavesÄ«, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness. He understood: āRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā āKhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti abbhaƱƱÄsi. And the mendicant GavesÄ« became one of the perfected. AƱƱataro ca panÄnanda, gavesÄ« bhikkhu arahataį¹ ahosi.
Then those five hundred lay followers thought: Atha kho, Änanda, tesaį¹ paƱcannaį¹ upÄsakasatÄnaį¹ etadahosi: āMaster GavesÄ« is our helper, leader, and adviser, āayyo kho gavesÄ« amhÄkaį¹ bahÅ«pakÄro pubbaį¹ gamo samÄdapetÄ. Then those five hundred lay followers went up to the blessed one Kassapa, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha and said to him: Atha kho, Änanda, tÄni paƱca upÄsakasatÄni yena kassapo bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho tenupasaį¹ kamiį¹su; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ kassapaį¹ bhagavantaį¹ arahantaį¹ sammÄsambuddhaį¹ etadavocuį¹: āSir, may we receive the going forth and ordination in the Buddhaās presence?ā ālabheyyÄma mayaį¹, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajjaį¹, labheyyÄma upasampadanāti. And they did receive the going forth and ordination in the Buddhaās presence. Alabhiį¹su kho, Änanda, tÄni paƱca upÄsakasatÄni kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammÄsambuddhassa santike pabbajjaį¹, alabhiį¹su upasampadaį¹.
Then the mendicant GavesÄ« thought: Atha kho, Änanda, gavesissa bhikkhuno etadahosi: āI get the supreme bliss of freedom whenever I want, without trouble or difficulty. āahaį¹ kho imassa anuttarassa vimuttisukhassa nikÄmalÄbhÄ« homi akicchalÄbhÄ« akasiralÄbhÄ«. Then those five hundred mendicants, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. They lived having achieved with their own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness. Atha kho, Änanda, tÄni paƱca bhikkhusatÄni vÅ«pakaį¹į¹hÄ appamattÄ ÄtÄpino pahitattÄ viharantÄ nacirassevaāyassatthÄya kulaputtÄ sammadeva agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ābrahmacariyapariyosÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja vihariį¹su.
They understood: āRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.ā āKhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti abbhaƱƱiį¹su.
And so, Änanda, those five hundred mendicants headed by GavesÄ«, trying to go higher and higher, better and better, realized the supreme bliss of freedom.
