About Gavesī Gavesīsutta

At one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans together with a large Saį¹…gha of mendicants. Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu cārikaṁ carati mahatā bhikkhusaį¹…ghena saddhiṁ. While traveling along a road the Buddha saw a large sal grove in a certain spot. Addasā kho bhagavā addhānamaggappaį¹­ipanno aƱƱatarasmiṁ padese mahantaṁ sālavanaṁ; He left the road, went to the sal grove, and plunged deep into it. And at a certain spot he smiled. disvāna maggā okkamma yena taṁ sālavanaṁ tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā taṁ sālavanaṁ ajjhogāhetvā aƱƱatarasmiṁ padese sitaṁ pātvākāsi.

Then Venerable Ānanda thought, Atha kho āyasmato ānandassa etadahosi: ā€œWhat is the cause, what is the reason why the Buddha smiled? ā€œko nu kho hetu ko paccayo bhagavato sitassa pātukammāya? Realized Ones do not smile for no reason.ā€ Na akāraṇena tathāgatā sitaṁ pātukarontÄ«ā€ti.

So Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha, Atha kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œWhat is the cause, what is the reason why the Buddha smiled? ā€œko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo bhagavato sitassa pātukammāya? Realized Ones do not smile for no reason.ā€ Na akāraṇena tathāgatā sitaṁ pātukarontÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œOnce upon a time, Ānanda, there was a city in this spot that was successful and prosperous, populous, full of people. ā€œBhÅ«tapubbaṁ, ānanda, imasmiṁ padese nagaraṁ ahosi iddhaƱceva phÄ«taƱca bahujanaṁ ākiṇṇamanussaṁ. And Kassapa, a blessed one, a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha, lived supported by that city. Taṁ kho panānanda, nagaraṁ kassapo bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho upanissāya vihāsi.

He had a lay follower named GavesÄ« who had not fulfilled all the precepts. Kassapassa kho panānanda, bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa gavesÄ« nāma upāsako ahosi sÄ«lesu aparipÅ«rakārÄ«. And the five hundred lay followers who were taught and advised by GavesÄ« also had not fulfilled all the precepts. Gavesinā kho, ānanda, upāsakena paƱcamattāni upāsakasatāni paį¹­idesitāni samādapitāni ahesuṁ sÄ«lesu aparipÅ«rakārino. Then GavesÄ« thought: Atha kho, ānanda, gavesissa upāsakassa etadahosi: ā€˜I’m the helper, leader, and adviser of these five hundred lay followers, yet neither I nor they have fulfilled the precepts. ā€˜ahaṁ kho imesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upāsakasatānaṁ bahÅ«pakāro pubbaį¹…gamo samādapetā, ahaƱcamhi sÄ«lesu aparipÅ«rakārÄ«, imāni ca paƱca upāsakasatāni sÄ«lesu aparipÅ«rakārino. We’re the same, I’m in no way better. Iccetaṁ samasamaṁ, natthi kiƱci atirekaṁ; So let me do better.’ handāhaṁ atirekāyā’ti.

Then GavesÄ« went to those five hundred lay followers and said to them: Atha kho, ānanda, gavesÄ« upāsako yena tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni etadavoca: ā€˜From this day forth may the venerables remember me as one who has fulfilled the precepts.’ ā€˜ajjatagge maṁ āyasmanto sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakāriṁ dhārethā’ti. Then those five hundred lay followers thought: Atha kho, ānanda, tesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upāsakasatānaṁ etadahosi: ā€˜Master GavesÄ« is our helper, leader, and adviser, ā€˜ayyo kho gavesÄ« amhākaṁ bahÅ«pakāro pubbaį¹…gamo samādapetā. and now he will fulfill the precepts. Ayyo hi nāma gavesÄ« sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakārÄ« bhavissati. Why don’t we do the same?’ Kimaį¹…gaṁ pana mayan’ti. Then those five hundred lay followers went to GavesÄ« and said to him: Atha kho, ānanda, tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni yena gavesÄ« upāsako tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; upasaį¹…kamitvā gavesiṁ upāsakaṁ etadavocuṁ: ā€˜From this day forth may Master GavesÄ« remember these five hundred lay followers as having fulfilled the precepts.’ ā€˜ajjatagge ayyo gavesÄ« imānipi paƱca upāsakasatāni sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakārino dhāretū’ti.

Then GavesÄ« thought: Atha kho, ānanda, gavesissa upāsakassa etadahosi: ā€˜I’m the helper, leader, and adviser of these five hundred lay followers, and both I and they have fulfilled the precepts. ā€˜ahaṁ kho imesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upāsakasatānaṁ bahÅ«pakāro pubbaį¹…gamo samādapetā, ahaƱcamhi sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakārÄ«, imānipi paƱca upāsakasatāni sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakārino. We’re the same, I’m in no way better. Iccetaṁ samasamaṁ, natthi kiƱci atirekaṁ; So let me do better.’ handāhaṁ atirekāyā’ti.

Then GavesÄ« went to those five hundred lay followers and said to them: Atha kho, ānanda, gavesÄ« upāsako yena tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni etadavoca: ā€˜From this day forth may the venerables remember me as one who is chaste, set apart, avoiding the vulgar act of sex.’ ā€˜ajjatagge maṁ āyasmanto brahmacāriṁ dhāretha ārācāriṁ virataṁ methunā gāmadhammā’ti. Then those five hundred lay followers did the same. … Atha kho, ānanda, tesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upāsakasatānaṁ etadahosi: ā€˜ayyo kho gavesÄ« amhākaṁ bahÅ«pakāro pubbaį¹…gamo samādapetā. Ayyo hi nāma gavesÄ« brahmacārÄ« bhavissati ārācārÄ« virato methunā gāmadhammā. Kimaį¹…gaṁ pana mayan’ti. Atha kho, ānanda, tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni yena gavesÄ« upāsako tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; upasaį¹…kamitvā gavesiṁ upāsakaṁ etadavocuṁ: ā€˜ajjatagge ayyo gavesÄ« imānipi paƱca upāsakasatāni brahmacārino dhāretu ārācārino viratā methunā gāmadhammā’ti.

Then GavesÄ« thought: Atha kho, ānanda, gavesissa upāsakassa etadahosi: ā€˜These five hundred lay followers … ā€˜ahaṁ kho imesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upāsakasatānaṁ bahÅ«pakāro pubbaį¹…gamo samādapetā. AhaƱcamhi sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakārÄ«. Imānipi paƱca upāsakasatāni sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakārino. AhaƱcamhi brahmacārÄ« ārācārÄ« virato methunā gāmadhammā. are chaste, set apart, avoiding the vulgar act of sex. Imānipi paƱca upāsakasatāni brahmacārino ārācārino viratā methunā gāmadhammā. We’re the same, I’m in no way better. Iccetaṁ samasamaṁ, natthi kiƱci atirekaṁ; So let me do better.’ handāhaṁ atirekāyā’ti.

Then GavesÄ« went to those five hundred lay followers and said to them: Atha kho, ānanda, gavesÄ« upāsako yena tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni etadavoca: ā€˜From this day forth may the venerables remember me as one who eats in one part of the day, abstaining from eating at night, and from food at the wrong time.’ ā€˜ajjatagge maṁ āyasmanto ekabhattikaṁ dhāretha rattÅ«parataṁ virataṁ vikālabhojanā’ti. Then those five hundred lay followers did the same. … Atha kho, ānanda, tesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upāsakasatānaṁ etadahosi: ā€˜ayyo kho gavesÄ« bahÅ«pakāro pubbaį¹…gamo samādapetā. Ayyo hi nāma gavesÄ« ekabhattiko bhavissati rattÅ«parato virato vikālabhojanā. Kimaį¹…gaṁ pana mayan’ti. Atha kho, ānanda, tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni yena gavesÄ« upāsako tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; upasaį¹…kamitvā gavesiṁ upāsakaṁ etadavocuṁ: ā€˜ajjatagge ayyo gavesÄ« imānipi paƱca upāsakasatāni ekabhattike dhāretu rattÅ«parate virate vikālabhojanā’ti.

Then GavesÄ« thought: Atha kho, ānanda, gavesissa upāsakassa etadahosi: ā€˜These five hundred lay followers … ā€˜ahaṁ kho imesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upāsakasatānaṁ bahÅ«pakāro pubbaį¹…gamo samādapetā. AhaƱcamhi sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakārÄ«. Imānipi paƱca upāsakasatāni sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakārino. AhaƱcamhi brahmacārÄ« ārācārÄ« virato methunā gāmadhammā. Imānipi paƱca upāsakasatāni brahmacārino ārācārino viratā methunā gāmadhammā. AhaƱcamhi ekabhattiko rattÅ«parato virato vikālabhojanā. eat in one part of the day, abstaining from eating at night, and food at the wrong time. Imānipi paƱca upāsakasatāni ekabhattikā rattÅ«paratā viratā vikālabhojanā. We’re the same, I’m in no way better. Iccetaṁ samasamaṁ, natthi kiƱci atirekaṁ; So let me do better.’ handāhaṁ atirekāyā’ti.

Then the lay follower GavesÄ« went up to the blessed one Kassapa, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha and said to him: Atha kho, ānanda, gavesÄ« upāsako yena kassapo bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā kassapaṁ bhagavantaṁ arahantaṁ sammāsambuddhaṁ etadavoca: ā€˜Sir, may I receive the going forth, the ordination in the Buddha’s presence?’ ā€˜labheyyāhaṁ, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajjaṁ labheyyaṁ upasampadan’ti. And he received the going forth, the ordination in the Buddha’s presence. Alattha kho, ānanda, gavesÄ« upāsako kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa santike pabbajjaṁ, alattha upasampadaṁ. Not long after his ordination, the mendicant GavesÄ«, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness. AcirÅ«pasampanno kho panānanda, gavesÄ« bhikkhu eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi.

He understood: ā€˜Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.’ ā€˜Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti abbhaƱƱāsi. And the mendicant GavesÄ« became one of the perfected. AƱƱataro ca panānanda, gavesÄ« bhikkhu arahataṁ ahosi.

Then those five hundred lay followers thought: Atha kho, ānanda, tesaṁ paƱcannaṁ upāsakasatānaṁ etadahosi: ā€˜Master GavesÄ« is our helper, leader, and adviser, ā€˜ayyo kho gavesÄ« amhākaṁ bahÅ«pakāro pubbaį¹…gamo samādapetā. He has shaved off his hair and beard, dressed in ocher robes, and gone forth from the lay life to homelessness. Ayyo hi nāma gavesÄ« kesamassuṁ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajissati. Why don’t we do the same?’ Kimaį¹…gaṁ pana mayan’ti. Then those five hundred lay followers went up to the blessed one Kassapa, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha and said to him: Atha kho, ānanda, tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni yena kassapo bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; upasaį¹…kamitvā kassapaṁ bhagavantaṁ arahantaṁ sammāsambuddhaṁ etadavocuṁ: ā€˜Sir, may we receive the going forth and ordination in the Buddha’s presence?’ ā€˜labheyyāma mayaṁ, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajjaṁ, labheyyāma upasampadan’ti. And they did receive the going forth and ordination in the Buddha’s presence. Alabhiṁsu kho, ānanda, tāni paƱca upāsakasatāni kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa santike pabbajjaṁ, alabhiṁsu upasampadaṁ.

Then the mendicant GavesÄ« thought: Atha kho, ānanda, gavesissa bhikkhuno etadahosi: ā€˜I get the supreme bliss of freedom whenever I want, without trouble or difficulty. ā€˜ahaṁ kho imassa anuttarassa vimuttisukhassa nikāmalābhÄ« homi akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«. Oh, may these five hundred mendicants do the same!’ Aho vatimānipi paƱca bhikkhusatāni imassa anuttarassa vimuttisukhassa nikāmalābhino assu akicchalābhino akasiralābhino’ti. Then those five hundred mendicants, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. They lived having achieved with their own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness. Atha kho, ānanda, tāni paƱca bhikkhusatāni vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­hā appamattā ātāpino pahitattā viharantā nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihariṁsu.

They understood: ā€˜Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’ ā€˜Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti abbhaƱƱiṁsu.

And so, Ānanda, those five hundred mendicants headed by GavesÄ«, trying to go higher and higher, better and better, realized the supreme bliss of freedom. Iti kho, ānanda, tāni paƱca bhikkhusatāni gavesÄ«pamukhāni uttaruttari paṇītapaṇītaṁ vāyamamānā anuttaraṁ vimuttiṁ sacchākaṁsu. So you should train like this: Tasmātiha, ānanda, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ā€˜Trying to go higher and higher, better and better, we will realize the supreme bliss of freedom.’ ā€˜uttaruttari paṇītapaṇītaṁ vāyamamānā anuttaraṁ vimuttiṁ sacchikarissāmā’ti. That’s how you should train.ā€ EvaƱhi vo, ānanda, sikkhitabbanā€ti.
