14. The Buddhas Buddhavagga
MÄradhÄ«taravatthu
He whose victory may not be undone, Yassa jitaį¹ nÄvajÄ«yati, a victory unrivaled in all the world; Jitaį¹ yassa noyÄti koci loke; by what track would you trace that Buddha, Taį¹ buddhamanantagocaraį¹, who leaves no track in his infinite range? Apadaį¹ kena padena nessatha.
Of craving, the weaver, the clinger, he has none: Yassa jÄlinÄ« visattikÄ, so where can he be traced? Taį¹hÄ natthi kuhiƱci netave; By what track would you trace that Buddha, Taį¹ buddhamanantagocaraį¹, who leaves no track in his infinite range? Apadaį¹ kena padena nessatha.
Devorohaį¹avatthu
The attentive intent on absorption, Ye jhÄnapasutÄ dhÄ«rÄ, who love the peace of renunciation, nekkhammÅ«pasame ratÄ; the Buddhas, ever mindful, DevÄpi tesaį¹ pihayanti, are envied by even the gods. sambuddhÄnaį¹ satÄ«mataį¹.
ErakapattanÄgarÄjavatthu
Itās hard to gain a human birth; Kiccho manussapaį¹ilÄbho, the life of mortals is hard; kicchaį¹ maccÄna jÄ«vitaį¹; itās hard to hear the true teaching; Kicchaį¹ saddhammassavanaį¹, the arising of Buddhas is hard. kiccho buddhÄnamuppÄdo.
ÄnandattherapaƱhavatthu
Not to do any evil; SabbapÄpassa akaraį¹aį¹, to embrace the good; kusalassa upasampadÄ; to purify oneās mind: Sacittapariyodapanaį¹, this is the instruction of the Buddhas. etaį¹ buddhÄna sÄsanaį¹.
Patient acceptance is the ultimate fervor. KhantÄ« paramaį¹ tapo titikkhÄ, Extinguishment is the ultimate, say the Buddhas. NibbÄnaį¹ paramaį¹ vadanti buddhÄ; No true renunciate injures another, Na hi pabbajito parÅ«paghÄtÄ«, nor does an ascetic hurt another. Na samaį¹o hoti paraį¹ viheį¹hayanto.
Not speaking ill nor doing harm; AnÅ«pavÄdo anÅ«paghÄto, restraint in the monastic code; PÄtimokkhe ca saį¹varo; moderation in eating; MattaƱƱutÄ ca bhattasmiį¹, staying in remote lodgings; PantaƱca sayanÄsanaį¹; commitment to the higher mindāAdhicitte ca Äyogo, this is the instruction of the Buddhas. Etaį¹ buddhÄna sÄsanaį¹.
Anabhiratabhikkhuvatthu
Even if it were raining money, Na kahÄpaį¹avassena, youād not be sated in sensual pleasures. titti kÄmesu vijjati; An astute person understands that sensual pleasures AppassÄdÄ dukhÄ kÄmÄ, offer little gratification and much suffering. iti viƱƱÄya paį¹įøito.
Thus they find no delight Api dibbesu kÄmesu, even in celestial pleasures. ratiį¹ so nÄdhigacchati; A disciple of the fully awakened Buddha Taį¹hakkhayarato hoti, delights in the ending of craving. sammÄsambuddhasÄvako.
AggidattabrÄhmaį¹avatthu
So many go for refuge Bahuį¹ ve saraį¹aį¹ yanti, to mountains and forest groves, pabbatÄni vanÄni ca; to shrines in tended parks; ÄrÄmarukkhacetyÄni, those people are driven by fear. manussÄ bhayatajjitÄ.
But such refuge is no sanctuary, Netaį¹ kho saraį¹aį¹ khemaį¹, it is no supreme refuge. netaį¹ saraį¹amuttamaį¹; By going to that refuge, Netaį¹ saraį¹amÄgamma, youāre not released from all suffering. sabbadukkhÄ pamuccati.
One gone for refuge to the Buddha, Yo ca buddhaƱca dhammaƱca, to his teaching and to the Saį¹ gha, saį¹ ghaƱca saraį¹aį¹ gato; sees the four noble truths CattÄri ariyasaccÄni, with right understanding: sammappaƱƱÄya passati.
suffering, sufferingās origin, Dukkhaį¹ dukkhasamuppÄdaį¹, sufferingās transcendence, dukkhassa ca atikkamaį¹; and the noble eightfold path Ariyaį¹ caį¹į¹haį¹ gikaį¹ maggaį¹, that leads to the stilling of suffering. dukkhÅ«pasamagÄminaį¹.
Such refuge is a sanctuary, Etaį¹ kho saraį¹aį¹ khemaį¹, it is the supreme refuge. etaį¹ saraį¹amuttamaį¹; By going to that refuge, Etaį¹ saraį¹amÄgamma, youāre released from all suffering. sabbadukkhÄ pamuccati.

Itās hard to find a thoroughbred man: Dullabho purisÄjaƱƱo, theyāre not born just anywhere. na so sabbattha jÄyati; A family where that attentive one is born Yattha so jÄyati dhÄ«ro, prospers in happiness. taį¹ kulaį¹ sukhamedhati.
Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu
Happy, the arising of Buddhas! Sukho buddhÄnamuppÄdo, Happy, the teaching of Dhamma! sukhÄ saddhammadesanÄ; Happy is the harmony of the Saį¹ gha, SukhÄ saį¹ ghassa sÄmaggÄ«, and the striving of the harmonious is happy. samaggÄnaį¹ tapo sukho.
Kassapadasabalassasuvaį¹į¹acetiyavatthu
When a person venerates the worthyāPÅ«jÄrahe pÅ«jayato, the Buddha or his disciple, buddhe yadi va sÄvake; who have transcended proliferation, PapaƱcasamatikkante, and have left behind grief and lamentation, tiį¹į¹asokapariddave.
quenched, fearing nothing from any quarterāTe tÄdise pÅ«jayato, the merit of one venerating such as these, nibbute akutobhaye; cannot be calculated by anyone, Na sakkÄ puƱƱaį¹ saį¹ khÄtuį¹, saying it is just this much. imettamapi kenaci.
