With Kakudha Kakudhatherasutta
So I have heard. Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āAt one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaās Monastery. ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme.
At that time the Koliyan named KakudhaāVenerable MahÄmoggallÄnaās supporterāhad recently passed away and been reborn in a certain host of mind-made gods. Tena kho pana samayena kakudho nÄma koliyaputto Äyasmato mahÄmoggallÄnassa upaį¹į¹hÄko adhunÄkÄlaį¹ kato aƱƱataraį¹ manomayaį¹ kÄyaį¹ upapanno. His incarnation was two or three times the size of a Magadhan village with its fields. Tassa evarÅ«po attabhÄvapaį¹ilÄbho hotiāseyyathÄpi nÄma dve vÄ tÄ«į¹i vÄ mÄgadhakÄni gÄmakkhettÄni. But with that incarnation he didnāt obstruct himself or others. So tena attabhÄvapaį¹ilÄbhena neva attÄnaį¹ no paraį¹ byÄbÄdheti.
Then the godling Kakudha went up to Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, Atha kho kakudho devaputto yenÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄmoggallÄnaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹hito kho kakudho devaputto Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄmoggallÄnaį¹ etadavoca: āSir, this fixed desire arose in Devadatta: ādevadattassa, bhante, evarÅ«paį¹ icchÄgataį¹ uppajji: āI shall lead the mendicant Saį¹ gha.ā āahaį¹ bhikkhusaį¹ ghaį¹ pariharissÄmÄ«āti. And as that thought arose, Devadatta lost that psychic power.ā SahacittuppÄdÄ ca, bhante, devadatto tassÄ iddhiyÄ parihÄ«noāti.
Thatās what the godling Kakudha said. Idamavoca kakudho devaputto. Then he bowed and respectfully circled MahÄmoggallÄna, keeping him on his right side, before vanishing right there. Idaį¹ vatvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄmoggallÄnaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyi.
Then MahÄmoggallÄna went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Atha kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āKakudho nÄma, bhante, koliyaputto mamaį¹ upaį¹į¹hÄko adhunÄkÄlaį¹ kato aƱƱataraį¹ manomayaį¹ kÄyaį¹ upapanno hoti. Tassa evarÅ«po attabhÄvapaį¹ilÄbhoāseyyathÄpi nÄma dve vÄ tÄ«į¹i vÄ mÄgadhakÄni gÄmakkhettÄni. So tena attabhÄvapaį¹ilÄbhena neva attÄnaį¹ no paraį¹ byÄbÄdheti. Atha kho, bhante, kakudho devaputto yenÄhaį¹ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ maį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Idamavoca, bhante, kakudho devaputto. Idaį¹ vatvÄ maį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«āti.
āBut MoggallÄna, did you encompass the godling Kakudhaās mind, and know that āKiį¹ pana te, moggallÄna, kakudho devaputto cetasÄ ceto paricca vidito: everything he says is correct and not otherwise?ā āyaį¹ kiƱci kakudho devaputto bhÄsati sabbaį¹ taį¹ tatheva hoti, no aƱƱathÄāāti?
āIndeed I did, sir.ā āCetasÄ ceto paricca vidito me, bhante, kakudho devaputto: āyaį¹ kiƱci kakudho devaputto bhÄsati sabbaį¹ taį¹ tatheva hoti, no aƱƱathÄāāti.
āMark these words, MoggallÄna! āRakkhassetaį¹, moggallÄna, vÄcaį¹. Mark these words! Rakkhassetaį¹, moggallÄna, vÄcaį¹. Now that futile man Devadatta will expose himself by his own deeds. IdÄni so moghapuriso attanÄva attÄnaį¹ pÄtukarissati.
MoggallÄna, there are these five teachers found in the world. PaƱcime, moggallÄna, satthÄro santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. What five? Katame paƱca?
Firstly, some teacher with impure conduct claims: āI am pure in ethics. My ethical conduct is pure, bright, uncorrupted.ā Idha, moggallÄna, ekacco satthÄ aparisuddhasÄ«lo samÄno āparisuddhasÄ«lomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddhaį¹ me sÄ«laį¹ pariyodÄtaį¹ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hanāti. But their disciples know: Tamenaį¹ sÄvakÄ evaį¹ jÄnanti: āThis teacher has impure ethical conduct, but claims to be ethically pure. āayaį¹ kho bhavaį¹ satthÄ aparisuddhasÄ«lo samÄno parisuddhasÄ«lomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddhaį¹ me sÄ«laį¹ pariyodÄtaį¹ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hanāti. They wouldnāt like it if we were to tell the laypeople. MayaƱceva kho pana gihÄ«naį¹ ÄroceyyÄma, nÄssassa manÄpaį¹. And how could we treat them in a way that they donāt like? Yaį¹ kho panassa amanÄpaį¹, kathaį¹ naį¹ mayaį¹ tena samudÄcareyyÄma: But they consent to robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. āsammannati kho pana cÄ«varapiį¹įøapÄtasenÄsanagilÄnappaccayabhesajjaparikkhÄrena; They themselves will be recognized by their own deeds.ā yaį¹ tumo karissati tumova tena paƱƱÄyissatÄ«āti. The disciples of such a teacher cover up their teacherās conduct, EvarÅ«paį¹ kho, moggallÄna, satthÄraį¹ sÄvakÄ sÄ«lato rakkhanti; and the teacher expects them to do so. evarÅ«po ca pana satthÄ sÄvakehi sÄ«lato rakkhaį¹ paccÄsÄ«sati.
Furthermore, some teacher with impure livelihood claims: āI am pure in livelihood. My livelihood is pure, bright, uncorrupted.ā Puna caparaį¹, moggallÄna, idhekacco satthÄ aparisuddhÄjÄ«vo samÄno āparisuddhÄjÄ«vomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddho me ÄjÄ«vo pariyodÄto asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hoāti. But their disciples know: Tamenaį¹ sÄvakÄ evaį¹ jÄnanti: āThis teacher has impure livelihood, but claims to have pure livelihood. āayaį¹ kho bhavaį¹ satthÄ aparisuddhÄjÄ«vo samÄno parisuddhÄjÄ«vomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddho me ÄjÄ«vo pariyodÄto asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hoāti. They wouldnāt like it if we were to tell the laypeople. MayaƱceva kho pana gihÄ«naį¹ ÄroceyyÄma, nÄssassa manÄpaį¹. And how could we treat them in a way that they donāt like? Furthermore, some teacher with impure teaching claims: āI am pure in teaching. My teaching is pure, bright, uncorrupted.ā Puna caparaį¹, moggallÄna, idhekacco satthÄ aparisuddhadhammadesano samÄno āparisuddhadhammadesanomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddhÄ me dhammadesanÄ pariyodÄtÄ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hÄāti. But their disciples know: Tamenaį¹ sÄvakÄ evaį¹ jÄnanti: āThis teacher has impure teaching, but claims to have pure teaching. āayaį¹ kho bhavaį¹ satthÄ aparisuddhadhammadesano samÄno parisuddhadhammadesanomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddhÄ me dhammadesanÄ pariyodÄtÄ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hÄāti. Furthermore, some teacher with impure answers claims: āI am pure in how I answer. My answers are pure, bright, uncorrupted.ā Puna caparaį¹, moggallÄna, idhekacco satthÄ aparisuddhaveyyÄkaraį¹o samÄno āparisuddhaveyyÄkaraį¹omhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddhaį¹ me veyyÄkaraį¹aį¹ pariyodÄtaį¹ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hanāti. But their disciples know: Tamenaį¹ sÄvakÄ evaį¹ jÄnanti: āThis teacher has impure answers, but claims to have pure answers. āayaį¹ kho bhavaį¹ satthÄ aparisuddhaveyyÄkaraį¹o samÄno parisuddhaveyyÄkaraį¹omhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddhaį¹ me veyyÄkaraį¹aį¹ pariyodÄtaį¹ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hanāti. Furthermore, some teacher with impure knowledge and vision claims: āI am pure in knowledge and vision. My knowledge and vision are pure, bright, uncorrupted.ā Puna caparaį¹, moggallÄna, idhekacco satthÄ aparisuddhaƱÄį¹adassano samÄno āparisuddhaƱÄį¹adassanomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddhaį¹ me ƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ pariyodÄtaį¹ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hanāti. But their disciples know: Tamenaį¹ sÄvakÄ evaį¹ jÄnanti: āThis teacher has impure knowledge and vision, but claims to have pure knowledge and vision. āayaį¹ kho bhavaį¹ satthÄ aparisuddhaƱÄį¹adassano samÄno parisuddhaƱÄį¹adassanomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄti āparisuddhaį¹ me ƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ pariyodÄtaį¹ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hanāti. But MoggallÄna, I have pure ethical conduct, and I claim: āI am pure in ethical conduct. My ethical conduct is pure, bright, uncorrupted.ā Ahaį¹ kho pana, moggallÄna, parisuddhasÄ«lo samÄno āparisuddhasÄ«lomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄmi āparisuddhaį¹ me sÄ«laį¹ pariyodÄtaį¹ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hanāti. My disciples donāt cover up my conduct, and I donāt expect them to. Na ca maį¹ sÄvakÄ sÄ«lato rakkhanti, na cÄhaį¹ sÄvakehi sÄ«lato rakkhaį¹ paccÄsÄ«sÄmi. I have pure livelihood, and I claim: āI am pure in livelihood. I have pure teaching, and I claim: āI am pure in teaching. My teaching is pure, bright, uncorrupted.ā Parisuddhadhammadesano samÄno āparisuddhadhammadesanomhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄmi āparisuddhÄ me dhammadesanÄ pariyodÄtÄ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hÄāti. My disciples donāt cover up my teaching, and I donāt expect them to. Na ca maį¹ sÄvakÄ dhammadesanato rakkhanti, na cÄhaį¹ sÄvakehi dhammadesanato rakkhaį¹ paccÄsÄ«sÄmi. I have pure answers, and I claim: āI am pure in how I answer. My answers are pure, bright, uncorrupted.ā ParisuddhaveyyÄkaraį¹o samÄno āparisuddhaveyyÄkaraį¹omhÄ«āti paį¹ijÄnÄmi āparisuddhaį¹ me veyyÄkaraį¹aį¹ pariyodÄtaį¹ asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hanāti. I have pure knowledge and vision, and I claim: āI am pure in knowledge and vision.
