Restraint Saį¹varasutta
āMendicants, there are these four efforts. āCattÄrimÄni, bhikkhave, padhÄnÄni. What four? KatamÄni cattÄri? The efforts to restrain, to give up, to develop, and to preserve. Saį¹varappadhÄnaį¹, pahÄnappadhÄnaį¹, bhÄvanÄppadhÄnaį¹, anurakkhaį¹ÄppadhÄnaį¹.
And what, mendicants, is the effort to restrain? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saį¹varappadhÄnaį¹? When a mendicant sees a sight with their eyes, they donāt get caught up in the features and details. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunÄ rÅ«paį¹ disvÄ na nimittaggÄhÄ« hoti nÄnubyaƱjanaggÄhÄ«. If the faculty of sight were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of sight, and achieving its restraint. YatvÄdhikaraį¹amenaį¹ cakkhundriyaį¹ asaį¹vutaį¹ viharantaį¹ abhijjhÄdomanassÄ pÄpakÄ akusalÄ dhammÄ anvÄssaveyyuį¹, tassa saį¹varÄya paį¹ipajjati, rakkhati cakkhundriyaį¹, cakkhundriye saį¹varaį¹ Äpajjati. And what, mendicants, is the effort to develop? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, bhÄvanÄppadhÄnaį¹? Itās when a mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ bhÄveti vivekanissitaį¹ virÄganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹Ämiį¹, investigation of principles, dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ bhÄveti ⦠energy, vÄ«riyasambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ bhÄveti ⦠rapture, pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ bhÄveti ⦠tranquility, passaddhisambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ bhÄveti ⦠immersion, samÄdhisambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ bhÄveti ⦠and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. upekkhÄsambojjhaį¹ gaį¹ bhÄveti vivekanissitaį¹ virÄganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹Ämiį¹. This is called the effort to develop. Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhÄvanÄppadhÄnaį¹.
And what, mendicants, is the effort to preserve? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, anurakkhaį¹ÄppadhÄnaį¹? Itās when a mendicant preserves a meditation subject thatās a fine basis of immersion: the perception of a skeleton, a worm-infested corpse, a livid corpse, a split open corpse, or a bloated corpse. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaį¹ bhaddakaį¹ samÄdhinimittaį¹ anurakkhati aį¹į¹hikasaƱƱaį¹ puįø·avakasaƱƱaį¹ vinÄ«lakasaƱƱaį¹ vicchiddakasaƱƱaį¹ uddhumÄtakasaƱƱaį¹. This is called the effort to preserve. Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, anurakkhaį¹ÄppadhÄnaį¹.
These are the four efforts. ImÄni kho, bhikkhave, cattÄri padhÄnÄnÄ«ti.
Restraint and giving up, Saį¹varo ca pahÄnaƱca, development and preservation: bhÄvanÄ anurakkhaį¹Ä; these are the four efforts Ete padhÄnÄ cattÄro, taught by the Kinsman of the Sun. desitÄdiccabandhunÄ; Any mendicant who keenly applies these Yehi bhikkhu idhÄtÄpÄ«, may attain the ending of suffering.ā khayaį¹ dukkhassa pÄpuį¹eāti.
