With Mahānāma (1st) Paṭhamamahānāmasutta

At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery. Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme.

At that time several mendicants were making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaṁ karonti: when his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering. ā€œniį¹­į¹­hitacÄ«varo bhagavā temāsaccayena cārikaṁ pakkamissatÄ«ā€ti.

Mahānāma the Sakyan heard about this. Assosi kho mahānāmo sakko: ā€œsambahulā kira bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaṁ karonti: ā€˜niį¹­į¹­hitacÄ«varo bhagavā temāsaccayena cārikaṁ pakkamissatÄ«ā€™ā€ti. He went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho mahānāmo sakko yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho mahānāmo sakko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, I have heard that ā€œsutaṁ metaṁ, bhante: several mendicants are making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that ā€˜sambahulā kira bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaṁ karonti—when his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering. niį¹­į¹­hitacÄ«varo bhagavā temāsaccayena cārikaṁ pakkamissatī’ti. Now, we spend our life in various ways. Which of these should we practice?ā€ Tesaṁ no, bhante, nānāvihārehi viharataṁ kenassa vihārena vihātabbanā€ti?

ā€œGood, good, Mahānāma! ā€œSādhu sādhu, mahānāma. It’s appropriate that gentlemen such as you come to me and ask: Etaṁ kho, mahānāma, tumhākaṁ patirÅ«paṁ kulaputtānaṁ, yaṁ tumhe tathāgataṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā puccheyyātha: ā€˜We spend our life in various ways. Which of these should we practice?’ ā€˜tesaṁ no, bhante, nānāvihārehi viharataṁ kenassa vihārena vihātabban’ti? The faithful succeed, not the faithless. Saddho kho, mahānāma, ārādhako hoti, no assaddho; The energetic succeed, not the lazy. āraddhavÄ«riyo ārādhako hoti, no kusÄ«to; The mindful succeed, not the unmindful. upaį¹­į¹­hitassati ārādhako hoti, no muį¹­į¹­hassati; Those with immersion succeed, not those without immersion. samāhito ārādhako hoti, no asamāhito; The wise succeed, not the witless. paƱƱavā ārādhako hoti, no duppaƱƱo.

When you’re grounded on these five things, go on to develop six further things. Imesu kho tvaṁ, mahānāma, paƱcasu dhammesu patiį¹­į¹­hāya cha dhamme uttari bhāveyyāsi.

Firstly, you should recollect the Realized One: Idha tvaṁ, mahānāma, tathāgataṁ anussareyyāsi: ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti. When a noble disciple recollects the Realized One their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. Yasmiṁ, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako tathāgataṁ anussarati, nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; At that time their mind is quite unswerving, based on the Realized One. ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti tathāgataṁ ārabbha. A noble disciple whose mind is unswerving finds inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and finds joy connected with the teaching. Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammÅ«pasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ. When they’re joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, they feel bliss. And when they’re blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi. Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jāyati, pÄ«timanassa kāyo passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaṁ vediyati, sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati. This is called a noble disciple who lives in balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are troubled. They’ve entered the stream of the teaching and developed the recollection of the Buddha. Ayaṁ vuccati, mahānāma, ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamāpanno buddhānussatiṁ bhāveti.

Furthermore, you should recollect the teaching: Puna caparaṁ tvaṁ, mahānāma, dhammaṁ anussareyyāsi: ā€˜The teaching is well explained by the Buddha—apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’ ā€˜svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiį¹­į¹­hiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī’ti. When a noble disciple recollects the teaching their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. … Yasmiṁ, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako dhammaṁ anussarati, nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti dhammaṁ ārabbha. Ayaṁ vuccati, mahānāma, ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamāpanno dhammānussatiṁ bhāveti.

Furthermore, you should recollect the Saį¹…gha: Puna caparaṁ tvaṁ, mahānāma, saį¹…ghaṁ anussareyyāsi: ā€˜The Saį¹…gha of the Buddha’s disciples is practicing the way that’s good, direct, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individual persons. This is the Saį¹…gha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with cupped palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.’ ā€˜suppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, ujuppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, Ʊāyappaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, sāmÄ«cippaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aį¹­į¹­ha purisapuggalā, esa bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo aƱjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puƱƱakkhettaṁ lokassā’ti. When a noble disciple recollects the Saį¹…gha their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. … Yasmiṁ, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako saį¹…ghaṁ anussarati, nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti saį¹…ghaṁ ārabbha. Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammÅ«pasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ. They’ve entered the stream of the teaching and developed the recollection of the Saį¹…gha. Ayaṁ vuccati, mahānāma, ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamāpanno saį¹…ghānussatiṁ bhāveti.

Furthermore, you should recollect your own ethical conduct, which is intact, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion. Puna caparaṁ tvaṁ, mahānāma, attano sÄ«lāni anussareyyāsi akhaį¹‡įøÄni acchiddāni asabalāni akammāsāni bhujissāni viƱƱuppasatthāni aparāmaį¹­į¹­hāni samādhisaṁvattanikāni. When a noble disciple recollects their ethical conduct their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. … Yasmiṁ, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako sÄ«laṁ anussarati, nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti sÄ«laṁ ārabbha. Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammÅ«pasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ. Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jāyati, pÄ«timanassa kāyo passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaṁ vediyati, sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati. This is called a noble disciple who lives in balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are troubled. They’ve entered the stream of the teaching and developed the recollection of their ethical conduct. Ayaṁ vuccati, mahānāma, ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamāpanno sÄ«lānussatiṁ bhāveti.

Furthermore, you should recollect your own generosity: Puna caparaṁ tvaṁ, mahānāma, attano cāgaṁ anussareyyāsi: ā€˜I’m so fortunate, so very fortunate. ā€˜lābhā vata me, suladdhaṁ vata me, Among people with hearts full of the stain of stinginess I live at home rid of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.’ yohaṁ maccheramalapariyuį¹­į¹­hitāya pajāya vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraṁ ajjhāvasāmi muttacāgo payatapāṇi vossaggarato yācayogo dānasaṁvibhāgarato’ti. When a noble disciple recollects their own generosity their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. … Yasmiṁ, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako cāgaṁ anussarati, nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti cāgaṁ ārabbha. Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammÅ«pasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ. Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jāyati, pÄ«timanassa kāyo passambhati, passaddhakāyo sukhaṁ vediyati, sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati. This is called a noble disciple who lives in balance among people who are unbalanced, and lives untroubled among people who are troubled. They’ve entered the stream of the teaching and developed the recollection of generosity. Ayaṁ vuccati, mahānāma, ariyasāvako visamagatāya pajāya samappatto viharati, sabyāpajjāya pajāya abyāpajjo viharati, dhammasotasamāpanno cāgānussatiṁ bhāveti.

Furthermore, you should recollect the deities: Puna caparaṁ tvaṁ, mahānāma, devatā anussareyyāsi: ā€˜There are the gods of the four great kings, the gods of the thirty-three, the gods of Yama, the joyful gods, the gods who love to create, the gods who control what is created by others, the gods of the Divinity’s host, and gods even higher than these. ā€˜santi devā cātumahārājikā, santi devā tāvatiṁsā, santi devā yāmā, santi devā tusitā, santi devā nimmānaratino, santi devā paranimmitavasavattino, santi devā brahmakāyikā, santi devā tatuttari. When those deities passed away from here, they were reborn there because of their faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom. I, too, have the same kind of faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.’ YathārÅ«pāya saddhāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«pā saddhā saṁvijjati. YathārÅ«pena sÄ«lena samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«paṁ sÄ«laṁ saṁvijjati. YathārÅ«pena sutena samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«paṁ sutaṁ saṁvijjati. YathārÅ«pena cāgena samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«po cāgo saṁvijjati. YathārÅ«pāya paƱƱāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tatthÅ«papannā, mayhampi tathārÅ«pā paƱƱā saṁvijjatī’ti. When a noble disciple recollects the faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom of both themselves and the deities their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. Yasmiṁ, mahānāma, samaye ariyasāvako attano ca tāsaƱca devatānaṁ saddhaƱca sÄ«laƱca sutaƱca cāgaƱca paƱƱaƱca anussarati, nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuį¹­į¹­hitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; At that time their mind is quite unswerving, based on the deities. ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti devatā ārabbha.
