Disciplinary Issues Nappiyasutta
There the Buddha addressed the mendicants concerning the mendicant Kalandaka: Tatra kho bhagavÄ kÄlaį¹ kataį¹ bhikkhuį¹ Ärabbha bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi:
āMendicants!ā ābhikkhavoāti.
āVenerable sir,ā they replied. āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. The Buddha said this: BhagavÄ etadavoca:
āFirstly, a mendicant raises disciplinary issues and doesnāt praise the settlement of disciplinary issues. āIdha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhikaraį¹iko hoti, adhikaraį¹asamathassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. This quality doesnāt conduce to fondness, respect, esteem, harmony, and unity. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhikaraį¹iko hoti adhikaraį¹asamathassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatÄya na garutÄya na bhÄvanÄya na sÄmaƱƱÄya na ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Furthermore, a mendicant doesnāt want to train, and doesnāt praise taking up the training. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na sikkhÄkÄmo hoti, sikkhÄsamÄdÄnassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na sikkhÄkÄmo hoti sikkhÄsamÄdÄnassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatÄya na garutÄya na bhÄvanÄya na sÄmaƱƱÄya na ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Furthermore, a mendicant has corrupt wishes, and doesnāt praise getting rid of wishes. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pÄpiccho hoti, icchÄvinayassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pÄpiccho hoti icchÄvinayassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatÄya na garutÄya na bhÄvanÄya na sÄmaƱƱÄya na ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Furthermore, a mendicant is irritable, and doesnāt praise getting rid of anger. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kodhano hoti, kodhavinayassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhavinayassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatÄya na garutÄya na bhÄvanÄya na sÄmaƱƱÄya na ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Furthermore, a mendicant denigrates others, and doesnāt praise getting rid of denigration. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu makkhÄ« hoti, makkhavinayassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu makkhÄ« hoti makkhavinayassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatÄya na garutÄya na bhÄvanÄya na sÄmaƱƱÄya na ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Furthermore, a mendicant is devious, and doesnāt praise getting rid of deviousness. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saį¹ho hoti, sÄį¹heyyavinayassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant is deceitful, and doesnāt praise getting rid of deceitfulness. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu mÄyÄvÄ« hoti, mÄyÄvinayassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Furthermore, a mendicant doesnāt pay attention to the teachings, and doesnāt praise attending to the teachings. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammÄnaį¹ na nisÄmakajÄtiko hoti, dhammanisantiyÄ na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammÄnaį¹ na nisÄmakajÄtiko hoti dhammanisantiyÄ na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatÄya na garutÄya na bhÄvanÄya na sÄmaƱƱÄya na ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Furthermore, a mendicant is not in retreat, and doesnāt praise retreat. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na paį¹isallÄ«no hoti, paį¹isallÄnassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na paį¹isallÄ«no hoti paį¹isallÄnassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatÄya na garutÄya na bhÄvanÄya na sÄmaƱƱÄya na ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Furthermore, a mendicant is inhospitable to their spiritual companions, and doesnāt praise hospitality. Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sabrahmacÄrÄ«naį¹ na paį¹isanthÄrako hoti, paį¹isanthÄrakassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. This quality doesnāt conduce to fondness, respect, esteem, harmony, and unity. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sabrahmacÄrÄ«naį¹ na paį¹isanthÄrako hoti paį¹isanthÄrakassa na vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatÄya na garutÄya na bhÄvanÄya na sÄmaƱƱÄya na ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Even though a mendicant such as this might wish: EvarÅ«passa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kiƱcÄpi evaį¹ icchÄ uppajjeyya: āIf only my spiritual companions would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!ā Still they donāt honor, respect, esteem, and venerate them. āaho vata maį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« sakkareyyuį¹ garuį¹ kareyyuį¹ mÄneyyuį¹ pÅ«jeyyunāti, atha kho naį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« na ceva sakkaronti na garuį¹ karonti na mÄnenti na pÅ«jenti. Why is that? Taį¹ kissa hetu? Because their sensible spiritual companions see that they havenāt given up those bad unskillful qualities. TathÄhissa, bhikkhave, viññū sabrahmacÄrÄ« te pÄpake akusale dhamme appahÄ«ne samanupassanti.
Suppose a wild colt was to wish: SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, assakhaįø·uį¹ kassa kiƱcÄpi evaį¹ icchÄ uppajjeyya: āIf only the humans would put me in a thoroughbredās place, feed me a thoroughbredās food, and give me a thoroughbredās grooming.ā Still the humans wouldnāt put them in a thoroughbredās place, feed them a thoroughbredās food, or give them a thoroughbredās grooming. āaho vata maį¹ manussÄ ÄjÄnÄ«yaį¹į¹hÄne į¹hapeyyuį¹, ÄjÄnÄ«yabhojanaƱca bhojeyyuį¹, ÄjÄnÄ«yaparimajjanaƱca parimajjeyyunāti, atha kho naį¹ manussÄ na ceva ÄjÄnÄ«yaį¹į¹hÄne į¹hapenti na ca ÄjÄnÄ«yabhojanaį¹ bhojenti na ca ÄjÄnÄ«yaparimajjanaį¹ parimajjanti. Why is that? Taį¹ kissa hetu? Because sensible humans see that they havenāt given up their tricks, bluffs, ruses, and feints. TathÄhissa, bhikkhave, viññū manussÄ tÄni sÄį¹heyyÄni kÅ«į¹eyyÄni jimheyyÄni vaį¹ keyyÄni appahÄ«nÄni samanupassanti. In the same way, even though a mendicant such as this might wish: Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, evarÅ«passa bhikkhuno kiƱcÄpi evaį¹ icchÄ uppajjeyya: āIf only my spiritual companions would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!ā Still they donāt honor, respect, esteem, and venerate them. āaho vata maį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« sakkareyyuį¹ garuį¹ kareyyuį¹ mÄneyyuį¹ pÅ«jeyyunāti, atha kho naį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ« na ceva sakkaronti na garuį¹ karonti na mÄnenti na pÅ«jenti. This quality conduces to fondness, respect, esteem, harmony, and unity. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na adhikaraį¹iko hoti adhikaraį¹asamathassa vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo piyatÄya garutÄya bhÄvanÄya sÄmaƱƱÄya ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Furthermore, a mendicant wants to train, and praises taking up the training. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sikkhÄkÄmo hoti, sikkhÄsamÄdÄnassa vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sikkhÄkÄmo hoti sikkhÄsamÄdÄnassa vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo piyatÄya garutÄya bhÄvanÄya sÄmaƱƱÄya ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
Furthermore, a mendicant has few desires, and praises getting rid of desires. ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appiccho hoti, icchÄvinayassa vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appiccho hoti icchÄvinayassa vaį¹į¹avÄdÄ«, ayampi dhammo ā¦pe⦠ekÄ«bhÄvÄya saį¹vattati.
