Disciplinary Issues Nappiyasutta

There the Buddha addressed the mendicants concerning the mendicant Kalandaka: Tatra kho bhagavā kālaį¹…kataṁ bhikkhuṁ ārabbha bhikkhÅ« āmantesi:

ā€œMendicants!ā€ ā€œbhikkhavoā€ti.

ā€œVenerable sir,ā€ they replied. ā€œBhadanteā€ti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuṁ. The Buddha said this: Bhagavā etadavoca:

ā€œFirstly, a mendicant raises disciplinary issues and doesn’t praise the settlement of disciplinary issues. ā€œIdha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhikaraṇiko hoti, adhikaraṇasamathassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«. This quality doesn’t conduce to fondness, respect, esteem, harmony, and unity. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhikaraṇiko hoti adhikaraṇasamathassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant doesn’t want to train, and doesn’t praise taking up the training. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na sikkhākāmo hoti, sikkhāsamādānassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na sikkhākāmo hoti sikkhāsamādānassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant has corrupt wishes, and doesn’t praise getting rid of wishes. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pāpiccho hoti, icchāvinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pāpiccho hoti icchāvinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant is irritable, and doesn’t praise getting rid of anger. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kodhano hoti, kodhavinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kodhano hoti kodhavinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant denigrates others, and doesn’t praise getting rid of denigration. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu makkhÄ« hoti, makkhavinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu makkhÄ« hoti makkhavinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant is devious, and doesn’t praise getting rid of deviousness. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saį¹­ho hoti, sāṭheyyavinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saį¹­ho hoti sāṭheyyavinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant is deceitful, and doesn’t praise getting rid of deceitfulness. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu māyāvÄ« hoti, māyāvinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu māyāvÄ« hoti māyāvinayassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant doesn’t pay attention to the teachings, and doesn’t praise attending to the teachings. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammānaṁ na nisāmakajātiko hoti, dhammanisantiyā na vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammānaṁ na nisāmakajātiko hoti dhammanisantiyā na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant is not in retreat, and doesn’t praise retreat. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na paį¹­isallÄ«no hoti, paį¹­isallānassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na paį¹­isallÄ«no hoti paį¹­isallānassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant is inhospitable to their spiritual companions, and doesn’t praise hospitality. Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sabrahmacārÄ«naṁ na paį¹­isanthārako hoti, paį¹­isanthārakassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«. This quality doesn’t conduce to fondness, respect, esteem, harmony, and unity. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sabrahmacārÄ«naṁ na paį¹­isanthārako hoti paį¹­isanthārakassa na vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo na piyatāya na garutāya na bhāvanāya na sāmaƱƱāya na ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Even though a mendicant such as this might wish: EvarÅ«passa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kiƱcāpi evaṁ icchā uppajjeyya: ā€˜If only my spiritual companions would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!’ Still they don’t honor, respect, esteem, and venerate them. ā€˜aho vata maṁ sabrahmacārÄ« sakkareyyuṁ garuṁ kareyyuṁ māneyyuṁ pÅ«jeyyun’ti, atha kho naṁ sabrahmacārÄ« na ceva sakkaronti na garuṁ karonti na mānenti na pÅ«jenti. Why is that? Taṁ kissa hetu? Because their sensible spiritual companions see that they haven’t given up those bad unskillful qualities. Tathāhissa, bhikkhave, viññū sabrahmacārÄ« te pāpake akusale dhamme appahÄ«ne samanupassanti.

Suppose a wild colt was to wish: Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, assakhaįø·uį¹…kassa kiƱcāpi evaṁ icchā uppajjeyya: ā€˜If only the humans would put me in a thoroughbred’s place, feed me a thoroughbred’s food, and give me a thoroughbred’s grooming.’ Still the humans wouldn’t put them in a thoroughbred’s place, feed them a thoroughbred’s food, or give them a thoroughbred’s grooming. ā€˜aho vata maṁ manussā ājānÄ«yaį¹­į¹­hāne į¹­hapeyyuṁ, ājānÄ«yabhojanaƱca bhojeyyuṁ, ājānÄ«yaparimajjanaƱca parimajjeyyun’ti, atha kho naṁ manussā na ceva ājānÄ«yaį¹­į¹­hāne į¹­hapenti na ca ājānÄ«yabhojanaṁ bhojenti na ca ājānÄ«yaparimajjanaṁ parimajjanti. Why is that? Taṁ kissa hetu? Because sensible humans see that they haven’t given up their tricks, bluffs, ruses, and feints. Tathāhissa, bhikkhave, viññū manussā tāni sāṭheyyāni kūṭeyyāni jimheyyāni vaį¹…keyyāni appahÄ«nāni samanupassanti. In the same way, even though a mendicant such as this might wish: Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, evarÅ«passa bhikkhuno kiƱcāpi evaṁ icchā uppajjeyya: ā€˜If only my spiritual companions would honor, respect, esteem, and venerate me!’ Still they don’t honor, respect, esteem, and venerate them. ā€˜aho vata maṁ sabrahmacārÄ« sakkareyyuṁ garuṁ kareyyuṁ māneyyuṁ pÅ«jeyyun’ti, atha kho naṁ sabrahmacārÄ« na ceva sakkaronti na garuṁ karonti na mānenti na pÅ«jenti. Next, a mendicant doesn’t raise disciplinary issues and praises the settlement of disciplinary issues. Idha pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na adhikaraṇiko hoti, adhikaraṇasamathassa vaṇṇavādÄ«. This quality conduces to fondness, respect, esteem, harmony, and unity. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na adhikaraṇiko hoti adhikaraṇasamathassa vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo piyatāya garutāya bhāvanāya sāmaƱƱāya ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant wants to train, and praises taking up the training. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sikkhākāmo hoti, sikkhāsamādānassa vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sikkhākāmo hoti sikkhāsamādānassa vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo piyatāya garutāya bhāvanāya sāmaƱƱāya ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant has few desires, and praises getting rid of desires. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appiccho hoti, icchāvinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appiccho hoti icchāvinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo …pe… ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant is not irritable, and praises getting rid of anger. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akkodhano hoti, kodhavinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akkodhano hoti kodhavinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo …pe… ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant doesn’t denigrate others, and praises getting rid of denigration. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu amakkhÄ« hoti, makkhavinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu amakkhÄ« hoti makkhavinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo …pe… ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant isn’t devious, and praises getting rid of deviousness. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asaį¹­ho hoti, sāṭheyyavinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asaį¹­ho hoti sāṭheyyavinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo …pe… ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Furthermore, a mendicant isn’t deceitful, and praises getting rid of deceitfulness. … Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu amāyāvÄ« hoti, māyāvinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«. Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu amāyāvÄ« hoti māyāvinayassa vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo …pe… ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.

Yampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammānaṁ nisāmakajātiko hoti dhammanisantiyā vaṇṇavādÄ«, ayampi dhammo …pe… ekÄ«bhāvāya saṁvattati.
